Phil Jagielka

Football is a squad game, he's been a top player for us for about a decade and now we should bin him off asap despite him proving at the end of the year he still has something to offer?

Big fan of Jags, and in a season where we're likely to play 50+ games, he can still make a decent contribution when there are injuries/suspensions or against lower league opposition. Not an automatic starter anymore but that doesn't mean his experience won't be useful.
He isn't good enough.

We lost how many games towards the end of the season? Hardly been rock solid, has he?

It isn't like he's won loads of trophies with us, is it?

He's also a very poor captain.

We owe him nothing at all.

He is a player whose career is now over at a top club.

He's made millions, now he can part on good terms.

So how do you approach it mate?

He has one year on his contract left, you are the manager, you sit him down, do you say to him pack your locker up and find a new club?

Would that be the approach you would take if you were manager?

Thats an opinion certainly, its a shame its just the wrong one on his captaincy skills.

Its not sentimentality, its being pragmatic, he played well up until Nov for me, then came back to his old best toward the end of the season. He rightly dropped out of the team on form and came back into the team for the same reason with others form and justifiably kept his place. Do i think he gets into the weekly 11, no, do i think he has a role to play in the EL, LC, FAC, suspension/injuries, yes. if he himself wanted to leave to play weekly at this stage of his career, i wouldn't have a problem with that.

He deserves it to if you want to stick to morals and values - that is different to sentimentality.

P.S. Howard was always gash.
Think we were watching different games towards the end of the season then mate because when he came back in we couldn't keep clean sheets and generally looked woeful in defence at times.

On the captaincy thing it's a pretty widely held few that's he's an utter shithouse, great pro but horrible captain when it comes to on the field.

If keeping over the hill players on the books is morals and values I'm sorry we're never going to win a thing, footballs a harsh profession these days, we need to become more ruthless instead of the usual jobs for the boys nonsense

I'd say:

"Thanks for the service, Jags, but you no longer have a place in this squad. Perhaps see if Sunderland still want you?"

Seen far too many of the likes of: Dustin, Neville, Osman, Hibbert, Howard and now probably Jags and Baines outstay their welcome.

I think some people think fantasy football and the real thing are the same and interchangeable... they are not.

Consistency and structured change is the key to success in real football.
Take the existing structure, add and improve in the areas that you are weakest in.
Each position needs cover of a good quality but also needs players that can accept not starting every week without throwing the dummy out of the pram.

Jagielka will not probably be a first eleven player(assuming we sign a good centrehalf as expected) , but he will provide very good experienced cover and is obviously a very good strong influence in the club...he has been captain under two different managers.

We do not want to change the squad completely, we want to add first team players that will make us even better, we want to integrate the youngsters.

It must be said that anybody advocating further wholesale changes after the way the squad was pruned in January have very little understanding of football and professional sport.

Would have him as cover no prob. As you say he has been captain if everton for a number if managers. That tells me There must be a real lack of leaders in that everton panel. He has captained a side that has repeatedly failed to perform against the current top 6. He should not be captain.

You sound fun. Bring players in first then when he can't get a game, he will ask to leave. No big deal.

Depends whether we get two new and decent centre-backs.

Holgate is too slight so lets exclude him right away. If one of the other centre-backs gets a long-term injury, he might
be still needed especially with the extra-workload of the Europa League especially if there are replacements this summer.

Ideally, he should be unloaded but lets wait and see..

One of the most spineless Everton captains we've had.

What did he contribute last season exactly? Because whenever he played we couldn't keep a clean sheet to save our lives.

There's being loyal and then there's being overly sentimental, he's well past it and all that's going to happen is he starts getting dogs abuse like Howard got when he was kept on for too long
Agree 100% mate.
Some will say we have improved defensively, I don't think we have, the work rate and organisation has improved. But when we have come up against the best teams, they have taken us apart with ease.

2 new centre backs and a new goalie required imo

Rumour has it Kooeman has changed the lock on his locker... it's the way we now tell players we don't want them
Ruthless but effective
