Found this an interesting paragraph from Jags on the website

“We’ve got a pre-season to prepare for next year and players want to put down a marker to be part of the manager’s plans. I’m not sure that was the case for every single one out there so that’s perhaps something we need to address"

Looks like he's calling out one or two players there for lack of effort.

He can call out all the players he wants. He is rubbish as a leader. Time and time again we have failed to preform in big matches, let leads slip in the last minute, under perform like damp squids and he has captained us all the way through. Need a new center back and a new captain.

This is something that worries me. In January, it looked like he could be off to Sunderland, now he is relishing Europe.

Jagielka in the current phase of his career does not deserve to be playing for a club in the Top 7 of the Premier League.

We need to stop with this sentimentality. Jagielka needs to go this summer, there should be no second thought about it.

I'd even suggest he should do the decent thing and retire. He has had a long career with Everton, he's made millions and overall will be remembered fondly.

Why we always keep players into their twilight years is another reason we won't be a top club anytime soon.

I think we owe him him some loyalty personally he proved at the end of the season he has a lot to contribute. May be he cant play week in week out the way he used to, but there is a lot still there to offer.

Nope. And we don't owe any player anything, thats what they receive huge salaries for

Personally i disagree mate, he is a very loyal servant, he turned down a big move to Arsenal when he was in his pomp to stay with us. It would gal me if he was binned of to Brighton or somewhere, i like to believe we have certain values and ethics at Everton and there is a reciprocal nature to how a player treats the club with respect and vice versa. Pienaar or Rooney i couldn't care less about but cases like Jags are different for me.

I think he has earned seeing out his contract, in terms of loyalty and his contribution last season. We have more games next season in many competitions and his leadership and experience i think will be vital.

This is the Everton Captain we are talking about.

Football is a squad game, he's been a top player for us for about a decade and now we should bin him off asap despite him proving at the end of the year he still has something to offer?

Big fan of Jags, and in a season where we're likely to play 50+ games, he can still make a decent contribution when there are injuries/suspensions or against lower league opposition. Not an automatic starter anymore but that doesn't mean his experience won't be useful.

One of the most spineless Everton captains we've had.

What did he contribute last season exactly? Because whenever he played we couldn't keep a clean sheet to save our lives.

There's being loyal and then there's being overly sentimental, he's well past it and all that's going to happen is he starts getting dogs abuse like Howard got when he was kept on for too long

Football can be simple. We confuse sometimes. Would phil get near the starting 11 of any top 6 side next year . Not a chance. We need to replace him in the starting 11. Not good enough.

Everton has a history if having 30 something yr old players who are past it in their starting 11 . It needs to change.

I think some people think fantasy football and the real thing are the same and interchangeable... they are not.

Consistency and structured change is the key to success in real football.
Take the existing structure, add and improve in the areas that you are weakest in.
Each position needs cover of a good quality but also needs players that can accept not starting every week without throwing the dummy out of the pram.

Jagielka will not probably be a first eleven player(assuming we sign a good centrehalf as expected) , but he will provide very good experienced cover and is obviously a very good strong influence in the club...he has been captain under two different managers.

We do not want to change the squad completely, we want to add first team players that will make us even better, we want to integrate the youngsters.

It must be said that anybody advocating further wholesale changes after the way the squad was pruned in January have very little understanding of football and professional sport.

Thats an opinion certainly, its a shame its just the wrong one on his captaincy skills.

Its not sentimentality, its being pragmatic, he played well up until Nov for me, then came back to his old best toward the end of the season. He rightly dropped out of the team on form and came back into the team for the same reason with others form and justifiably kept his place. Do i think he gets into the weekly 11, no, do i think he has a role to play in the EL, LC, FAC, suspension/injuries, yes. if he himself wanted to leave to play weekly at this stage of his career, i wouldn't have a problem with that.

He deserves it to if you want to stick to morals and values - that is different to sentimentality.

P.S. Howard was always gash.
