Phil Jagielka

The Dutch League is the Dutch League. He's played 442, 433 and 4231 at Southampton.

Your points re Jags are fair enough mate, but you would have to accept that Koeman played a back 3 a fair bit last season at Southampton too. I can see him utilising it a fair bit here as well.

I think the Williams signing will give us a lot of what Jagielka did. It will be a case of how Koeman wants to fade him out.

Ronald Koeman has admitted that Saints could make a permanent change to playing three centre halves following their recent successes.

Koeman’s decision to go to a more defensive system, but one which allows Saints greater possession and the chance to build from the back, has paid dividends.

Saints have secured successive home wins against Watford and West Brom, keeping clean sheets in both matches.

Though Koeman wants flexibility from his team in terms of systems, and is working on that in training, starting with three centre backs could be a regular tactic for Saints.

We should just hope that Koeman adapts to every situation we face this season. If 3 at the back is the order of the day, then so be it.
Unless you're Glen Hoddle three at the back is a system managers play here as a stop gap when trying to make do due to injuries/suspensions.

You can morph to that in a game, but it's alien to us bier here.

....and how often did he deploy it?

He played VVD and Fonte as an orthodox CB pairing all season.

It's an article of faith in Italy, over here it's always been and will remain a novelty.

Just admit you were wrong David.
You'll feel better for it and look marginally less foolish.

Glenn Hoddle thinks the disabled did something wrong in a previous life, he's irrelevant. Next.
