Unless you're Glen Hoddle three at the back is a system managers play here as a stop gap when trying to make do due to injuries/suspensions.

You can morph to that in a game, but it's alien to us bier here.

....and how often did he deploy it?

He played VVD and Fonte as an orthodox CB pairing all season.

It's an article of faith in Italy, over here it's always been and will remain a novelty.

he played it for 10 games in a row last season Dave.

Your points re Jags are fair enough mate, but you would have to accept that Koeman played a back 3 a fair bit last season at Southampton too. I can see him utilising it a fair bit here as well.

I think the Williams signing will give us a lot of what Jagielka did. It will be a case of how Koeman wants to fade him out.
Every manager goes through a period where they switch things around and they'll change formation. But what were talking about is the mode. Martinez went three at the back sometimes with Wigan and when here, but he went essentially for a 4231 set up. Koeman played three at times at Southampton but as originally said this is not his preferred system.

There's some argument being created here based on a belief that if he deviated from two out and out CBs for a spell to use three then this means he favours it. It's crazy. It's a straw man argument.

Glenn Hoddle thinks the disabled did something wrong in a previous life, he's irrelevant. Next.
But he is a very good example of what I'm talking about here: a manager COMMITTED to playing that system with three CBs as opposed to most managers (Koeman included) who dabble with it...usually out of necessity when players are unavailable.

That's a fair point mate. Most managers do have a preferred system. I think Koeman is unique as what differentiates him is his tactical flexibility.

I also suspect with our defensive frailties we will use 3 at the back as quite a stock option this season. I don't think Baines or Coleman are defensively solid enough for Koeman. I don't think he trusts our wingers to player wife players in front of a back 4. I also suspect he feels Lukaku isn't fit enough to play up front alone.

This can be solved longer term with major surgery but helped shorter term by a formation change.

This doesn't mean Jagielka stays. I thought he was good yesterday. However so was Mori. I think after last season I would not object to any player being sold.

Jags read the game well - Holgate had a great game as did Mori the three at the back worked well - Holgate looked the most alert what worries me is when Williams comes in will Holgate drop out and we lose that pace?
