Very harsh Dave - he was outstanding today, your view would hold more value if you could also recognise the positives he brings.
I've never dispute he's a capable stopper, but that's his upper limit. He has no distribution to speak of and he goes missing when it gets tight - unforgivable for a "captain".

If he stays but we get another CB in I'm confident he'll be a bit part player, so that'll do. Better still we sell him and get him off the wage bill though.

Depends the formation, think we'll see 3 at the back a few times. And the way we've collect injuries to Cbs the last few years, we can never have enough
Four senior CBs, one of them captain, sharing two places it would be for the vast majority of time.

That's an ungovernable situation. Something would have to give, especially as we have others coming through for that position.

If we get Kone in, Jagielka will be allowed to leave. I think that's the crux of it.

Why is Koeman intent on another CB then?

If Kone or other comes in, who gets the two starting places?

He wants four centre halves for the season.

I don't think he sees Holgate as quite being ready for a full season yet in that position, so we're talking Williams, Funes Mori, Jagielka plus AN Other.

If Jags is to leave, I doubt it would happen till next Summer. Obviously if Jags wasn't happy about being one of four competing for a place and wanted out, then that would change things, but I doubt that's the case.

I can see us playing with three at the back on more than a few occasions this season, so this would be important as we'd have a variety of choices.

Williams, Jagielka and Koné with Mori on the bench would be a good option. If it's two at the back then Koné can be also be left back cover.

Same here, I think we'll see a lot of three at the back this season. If Koeman was going to go with a regular flat back four then we'd get by with three recognised centre halves plus one or two youngsters, which might have meant Jagielka leaving.

Luckily, three at the back with Jags playing is quite likely. I say luckily because Jags being around gives dave something to Victor Meldrew about, which, to be fair, is an impression he's mastered perfectly. I half suspect dave is actually a Rory Bremner multi, donning various cloaks to conceal his true thoughts.

People confident of Koeman playing three CBs regularly should be able to point out that playing this way is something he's done in the past. He hasn't.

Err, not claiming any personal knowledge as don't watch Dutch football but from what I read he's used three at the back quite a bit in the past and certainly recall some S'ton games where he did.

Koeman has utilised the 3-5-2 formation at PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord and Southampton. In fact, it was his use of it in Eindhoven which stuck in the mind of Louis van Gaal, who then utilised it with Holland at the 2014 World Cup. They would make the semi-finals.

We should just hope that Koeman adapts to every situation we face this season. If 3 at the back is the order of the day, then so be it.

PSV
Feyenoord

Two clubs where he played three at the back on a regular basis. He used it occassionally at Soton too when he thought they were shaky defensively.

Until he's got players fully fit and got the defence properly sorted out I suspect we'll see three centre halves on the pitch on a fairly regular basis.

Plainly I could be wrong, and equally plainly you never are !
Time will tell.

Edit : and Legs thinks there might be something in to and, at least as far as footie knowlege goes ...

Legs > davek > me

I know my place.

The Dutch League is the Dutch League. He's played 442, 433 and 4231 at Southampton.
