Transfer Rumour Philippe Coutinho

At the top level of the game all the teams play well together. It’s about consistency and fine margins though isn’t it. There’s the odd game Coleman looks great for us, sharp and quick, then the next three he’s hopeless, same with Davies. Imagine though they were at that level every game. That would make a huge difference to us and they’re pretty poor players. Imagine we had the best version of Richarlison every game, rather than once every seven. It’s the difference between a shot being blocked or being fired on goal, getting there in time to draw a pen, winning a 50:50 or losing it. A slight edge all over the pitch every game can make a huge difference. Then of course confidence comes when you know you have a physical edge, the confidence to always make runs, the confidence to try stuff knowing you can recover if you lose it. That all leads to playing better.

Come on then, whats drugs do the likes of City and Liverpool take for two years then have a year off???

What other clubs are also doping?? Let me guess, you will say the likes of Bayern etc etc probably the clubs that are winning trophies right now.

Obviously I have no proof, but I find it hard to believe that football is the only completely clean sport in the world with all the money that flows through it.

When you see a team of generational 1-11 players winning trophies but occasionally playing badly, having times in game they’ve gone off the boil, retaining that form for long periods of their career, then fine you can accept that. Real Madrid would be an example for me of that, the likes of Ronaldo Benzema Modric Kroos Casemiro Ramos Varane, they’ve been brilliant most of their careers, Ancelotti was able to get a tune out of them, then Zidane did, and even now they’re pretty good still. They’re some of the best players in the history of the game and Madrid though. When you look at their domestic record it’s still pretty patchy though. United also Rooney Ronaldo Tevez etc. they went up a level to win things but still had it difficult domestically.

Liverpool took players that had never ever been at that level and got to a point where they almost didn’t lose a premier league game for close to two seasons. They barely dropped points. They would have obliterated all premier league records if City weren’t also obliterating them. Perhaps it could have been explained with a generational 11 of world class talent but the likes of Milner Henderson Gomez Wijnaldum were all in there. I’m sure some of it was decent coaching by Klopp but come on, no team in premier league history had hit the levels they hit and to do it in the way they did it also just blowing teams off the pitch home and away. Not for me. But we can agree to disagree.

Football is not a clean sport, never has and never will be.

Lack of testing and funding from the likes of UEFA and FIFA as they don't really want to catch people.

All clubs and players will look for an edge and in this case the England doctor wanted to get the players on salbutamol to help with the endurance.

But, the salbutamol is not going to make them more clinical in front of goal, help them with passes or crossing or with the football brain.

Serie A was rumoured to be rife with players on PED's back in the 2000's. Juve and AC Milan meant to be the main culprits as samples never got tested in the cities labs.

He has obvious qualities but it's a lazy transfer link.

Maybe a loan but £30m plus his huge wages are just daft when we need to strengthen in weaker areas.

He is very similar to James - Barca move went south after terrible transfer after terrible transfer plus Manager/Board messes. His loan to Bayern gave him a Champions League but I think his asking price is too much even for them.

Stats wise, I would expect him to have bigger numbers then he should but still good.

He is also coming off a long injury so it's another risk plus turns 29 this summer so not much long term planning behind this transfer.

Loan - Yes
Free - Yes
Buy - No

I have no proof, but I think almost all top athletes dope nowadays. When I was a kid all athletes declined in their early thirties, but currently many of the the best tennis, basketball, baseball, and football players are far past that and are still producing at a high level. And some people will point to "sports science" and "modern training" methods, etc., but I just don't believe it. For one thing, physical training is not like pharmaceuticals where you have double-blind, reproducible studies. That is, there's not a lot of "science" to it. For another, there was always some athletes who kept themselves in good shape. Yes, some of them smoked cigarettes and partied in the offseason, but not all of them. And yet no one stayed at their peak into their late 30s, as is not uncommon nowadays.

I remember in baseball after the McGuire/Sosa scandal everyone said, "we should have known something was up." One day we'll say the same about the longevity of today's players. And if we dont it will be because it will be common and accepted and no one will care.

I get the sense these rumours are being pushed more at the Barca than the Everton end, though I would not be surprised if Everton had an interest. There has been a lot of talk of needing another player akin to James to take the pressure off him when he's not playing. Coutinho certainly fits that criteria.

I could see a loan arrangement probably being the msot likely if he were to come, I dont see us paying 40m for him in the current market. A loan, and then maybe 20m next summer might work for all parties.

Id have him in a heartbeat though. I see a lot of the comments about him remind me of similar to James last year. He is miles better than what we have, much like James.

As I said yesterday some massively over rate our players. Coutinho would waltz into our side. We are a very snobby fanbase who laughs at players like Danny Ings and Wilf Zaha yet those players would likely have us top 4/5 spots right now if you replaced Toshun & Iwobi in the squad with those two for example.

I largely agree with that. There's no doubt that he's had quite a big dip, but at his best he was probably Liverpool's best player. The season he left they won the CL and he was their best player. Like James hes an elite player.

I like Zaha too, but the difficulty with Zaha is you are having to pay a high price for him. I'm not sure we should be breaking the bank for a player like him, or Coutinho, but if the price is right then we should be in there.

And I agree on Ings, it doesn't look like it will work here for King which is a shame but it was a very low risk move. We will have lost out on a loan fee and 4 months worth of wages. If we can get a decent price for Kean, Ings would be a really good replacement, especially given he only has 12 months left on a deal.

I do understand lots of people want exciting foreign players, but I have become increasingly convinced the path to the top 4 is essentially built through low risk, solid, experienced players.

Its funny really, even Sigurdsson falls into this as well. People slate him, Ive probably slated him too, but look at his goals and assists record. Hes not fast like Oxlade Chamberlain, but look at his output compared to the likes of him and Keita. Hes miles ahead.

Never gonna happen.

But it does remind me when he came on as a sub on loan at Bayern only to bag a brace against the club paying his wages. Highly amusing.

Never happen due to the wages he's on, more importantly I don't think he'd ever come to us out of sheer embarrassment for leaving Liverpool to "win things" then Liverpool go on to win the CL and league in successive seasons why he's been shipped out on loan.

Bit of a tampon these days but he is absolutely quality let's not pretend otherwise.

Only reason I could see him wanting the move would be family purposes if he wants to relocate back here. Otherwise he could still play at a CL level, there’s be teams willing to buy him too, why would he want to join us?
