Player Power and Influence

What I'm saying is you either accept player power and deal with the things it brings or you de facto side with the owners and they are the ones doing the real damage. Maybe you don't like either, but I think one group is preferable.

I also don't go along with this idea that players don't work hard or care. They didn't just wake up one day as professional footballers.
I didn’t used to believe it until I saw some of Morgan Schneiderlin’s performances.

It’s definitely something that happens 100%.

Remember Joleon Lescott downing tools against Arsenal because we wouldn’t grant him his move to City? He eventually got his move, because it was clear he didn’t want to put in the required effort.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but there is this semi-widespread view among Evertonians that we'd be great if the players just cared more and no, not for me.

I don’t entirely disagree, but it’s up to the club to choose players that have the right mentality. In hindsight Schneiderlin wasn’t a good signing. Mourinho had him sussed and so he was allowed to leave. He performed admirably for 6 months and then regressed.

We are where we are because of poor recruitment.

None of them would be earning anywhere near the amounts on offer if there were no fans, we've seen what a dour game it can be when stadiums are empty. The atmosphere is what makes a football game player power has too much weight these days. The footy is getting worse as well and I hate clubs going under.

So what you saying?
It's like the game ain't the same
Got younger footballers pulling the triggers, bringing fame to their name
And claim some corners,
clubs without fans are goners
I didn’t mean it in a nasty way.

The English game is as old as God’s beard and there’s certain principles and values that people hold. Historical clubs like Everton were started in working class communities, and the greed and relentless nature of the modern game is fast eroding those principles and values that are/were shared by clubs and fans alike.

The game is a lot different now, and to an extent we should embrace change. But when you stray too far from your core identity it starts to alienate people.

And like you said without the fans clubs are nothing.

It’s to be expected that overseas fans have different viewpoints. I don’t mean any disrespect in saying that.

I don't mean to be disrespectful in my response. I agree with a lot of what you say and am ambivalent or confused about other parts and, as you note, sports and athletes are viewed differently by Yanks. In my view, the largest issue with the game is entitlement by certain clubs and the placation to them by certain organizing bodies... and maybe this results in the same attitude towards certain players who seem to feel too big for their boots...

But I do also believe in (insert boring aphorism) the power of markets; the game still belongs to the fans, and these wrongs will in large measure be corrected in the long run.

Totally agree. If they were paid a pittance I'd have some sympathy for them having to work hard for a few hours a week to be successful at a hobby. They're not paid a pittance though, so should be expected to work hard to earn it.
You’re being harsh Chris. If they’re tired after training then it will have a detrimental effect on their golf swings in the afternoon.

Player power set Liverpool back years.

Roy Evans couldn’t get his head round it.

Story of a mobile phone going off during his team talk and the player ( McManaman I think ?) answered it.
Evans goes mad and Ince steps in and has a pop at Evans.
He should have grabbed the phone and smashed it on Ince’s head.

Didn't the Liverpool players park in Roy Evans car parking space every day for a laugh?
I heard they used to race each other to the training ground so they could be the
first to get the space. I would have just parked behind the car in my space and left
it there until 6 O'clock in the evening. Do that a couple of times and that would have
been the end of that.

It seems once a player or even club get to a certain level, they appear to be able to do as they please with no consequences.

Didn't Houllier when he took sole charge loan a French player who never played to spy in the changing room and report to Houllier so he knew who get rid off.

Those awful white suits at that cup final were definitely player power.

Agents have more power than the players now, Raiola and Mendes are so powerful, they hold clubs to hostage.

The Portuguese team yesterday, every single player who played minutes on the pitch were all Mendes clients.

Look at Raiola going on a whistle stop tour of clubs last season for his client Haaland with instructions that him and Haaland's Dad each get £20 million fees paid to them for any future transfer.
