Looking at his Wikipedia page you're right. In the doc Peter Reid is shown bollocking his team at half time against Everton and he definitely says "I know it's difficult, you've got Barmby dropping in the hole and Thompson out on the wing." It triggered a memory of Alan Thompson signing from Bolton, which apparently never happened.

Who was he on about?
Sussed it lads - it was Claus Thomsen

Dave Smallman - Good lad from Wrexham. Sadly injury prone if I remember
thats the fella, lacked confidence, and was just starting to show how good he was when he got injured, think he came back and got injured again near straight away, shame really showed flashes of having something really good about him.

John Hills, looked half decent till injury set him back

I was the first person to welcome him to Everton. I was at Goodison on a Friday morning as he arrived to gave a look around his new club and opened the door for him.

did we get him from blackpool ?
likewise i met Stephen Rehn getting off the plane to sign for us while working at manchester airport. should have put him back on and saved us all a waste of time.

Yes and he ended up back there I think

Jamie Milligan is another I always thought was destined for stardom but never made it. I saw him score twice for England u18s against Italy and then was our best player in a 3-0 defeat to Coventry.

Even went so far as to make up a song to the tune of Michael Finnegan which I imagined being sung around goodison.... He will score and we will win again, Milligan, begin again!
