Bruce Wayne

Player Valuation: £100m
As some of the longer term members know, we've had long-running discussions about the merits of political threads on GOT as they tend to result in disagreements and in-fighting amongst Blues.

They, and other similarly 'hot' topics, do tend to be discussed however, so we're going to trial putting them all into the upgraded member lounge, where moderation is more relaxed on account of it being primarily used by members who have shown a willingness to support the site.

Threads that will be put there include topics such as politics, religion, guns and so on. Any existing threads on these topics will be moved over to the upgraded lounge by Sunday evening.

so that we are just left with cat GIF threads and Carlos's quick reply box

From my perspective, anyone that brings Carlos' thread into an argument such as this doesn't get what this place is about.

To be perfectly blunt, if the mods aren't interested in modding the forum, then that's the big problem here isn't it?

They are interested in modding the forum. But it seems like they want to try something different so they can concentrate on moderating things which don't actively break the rules. Plainly the rule about politics was made to be broken, but more on that in a minute.

I would like to offer my services as a moderator for the political and awkward threads.......now just watch the complaints....

I know your post is a bit tongue in cheek mate, and I actually think you'd make an ace moderator, but one of the common themes coming out of this thread is a willingness to help moderate political threads, but at first glance, there's not a great deal of willingness to moderate the whole forum.

I think that says a lot about peoples priorities in the forum. Whether that's important, good or bad, or even relevant is open to debate, I just find it interesting.

The mods have always been pragmatic on political threads,

Unless you've had to reinvent yourself, you've been here since 2015 so your experience is limited. You joined when @The Esk was moderating, who, along with @Bruce Wayne was keen on promoting political discussion on GOT. @roydo started moderating in 2015 and he liked / likes to natter about political stuff.

Previous to that, the mod teams stance on political threads was less positive. These things tend to go in phases and I suspect it's always been so, and will remain something which ebbs and flows.

Bruce is getting a lot of stick in this thread, but he deserves a lot of credit for coming out and saying he's changed his mind on how the political stuff should be treated. The way people are reacting you'd think the change was written in tablets of stone and will never change, but, to me it sounds like an experiment which will be reviewed in due course.

You are being divisive

Yea, I'm taking a slightly exaggerated stance, but someone accusing me of being divisive on a thread about political threads makes me smile a bit !

Truth is I have an almost unique perspective on this because I know the angst it causes in mod central but, because I'm no longer in there I can be brutally honest ( I likely would be even if I was still a mod btw, that's how I roll unless it's plainly going to upset someone unnecessarily ). So I'm sorry ( but not much ) if my honesty upsets you.

I will say one last thing though. I ain't going to name names, but at least one person who's been vocal on this thread has previously reported posts from right-wing members whose views they found repulsive.

Now, while I agree that the views were indeed repulsive, I think that if you want to discuss politics and the like on here, you have to take the rough with the smooth and allow ALL views to be aired. Even if those views appear to incite hatred and may actually be illegal, they are likely held by a sizable minority of the population so, for me, it's an all or nothing situation, so there's a wee bit of hypocrisy being aired in this thread.

Didn't think it was something to be beaten with when I signed up to be honest.

It's not really, and your knowledge of politics and it's effect on people does you great credit.

It just shows that the political stuff on here is much more important to you than it is to your average poster, so is it not possible that you're overreacting ?

To be honest, until you joined the conversation everything was well natured. You can tell who the ones are who usually contribute to political threads here are because they have done so without resorting to calling people 'cry-arses'.

Is it not possible that you're playing (successfully, I might add) some sort of devils advocate role?

I'd prefer that all political discussion was allowed except that there should be no platform for racial or other abuse.
