It is mark of remembrance for the fallen and the sacrifice they made - not patriotism.

EDIT - 'perceived' My bad.

Though I'd disagree that distaste of jingoistic displays is some kind of middle-class leftist thing. Plenty of working class people have issues with among them many, many former squaddies.

When it comes to acceptable forms of patriotism, the left are selective.

Irish patriotism= Good.
Palestinian patriotism =Good.

British patriotism= racist and evil.

My Grandad fought them fascist bastards from the first day he could enrol. He signed up and seen conflict in the Near East, Atlantic and fought gallantly against the invaders in France. By the end of the war he’d killed in excess of 100 enemies, at least 20 of them coming by his bare hands or bayonet. He was decorated with the Cross but kept it in the draw and never once talked about the war. The only sign you would see of it would be turning Allo Allo over. A good man who stood against fascists until the end.

RIP Grandad Fritz, if you could see England now you’d want to fight them all over again.

You know things are rough when you're lifting material from Bernard Manning

Ah yes, the annual War Christmas festivities!

For the record, I have no issue with those who choose to wear one, I have family & friends who are ex-servicemen/women.

However, I dislike how certain groups have now taken to using the Poppy and Remembrance Sunday as some sort of badge of patriotism. The one-upmanship & the Poppy fascism in particular.

“Dear BBC, I noticed during a recent broadcast of Antiques Roadshow that some of the middle-class junk hoarders on your show WERE NOT WEARING A POPPY.
Despite the fact that any dribbling idiot could work out these shows are filmed many months in advance. AS A TV LICENSE PAYER it pains me to see the once great WOKE BBC not forcing people to wear poppies in April when this was filmed.
Pease do better.”

My Grandad lied about his age to join the Navy in WW2, his ship was sunk and was shipped up by the Nazi's and taken to Poland to be a Prisoner of War for 3 years.

It was only at his funeral I heard about the suffering he went through and the stories about surviving on rats.

Most laid back and relaxed man ever.

My Great Grandad was in the Navy and came back from a tour with a broken leg and walked with a stick and limp for the rest of his life having told the family he fell from the crow's nest in high seas.

At his funeral a navy pal was surprised to hear this as he was with him when he was so pissed he got ran over by a tram in Glasgow on shore leave.

I honestly never listened to him and am now ashamed of my brain and questioning life choices.

Point stands though if you support England in the World Cup you’re a Nazi guys.

It was perhaps the only good joke he ever made whipping a crowd into a patriotic frenzy talking about his "VIP guests tonight. Two lads who've just returned from fighting for their country in the Falklands. Both wounded at Goose Green" etc etc... had the whole crowd stand up to applaud them then dropped "give it up for Pedro and Carlos!"

Depends. There's a fine and often crossed line between patriotism and hate based jingoism. There's a heavy overlap of flag waving jingoism and right wing intolerance not unique to Britain. It's completely understandable that many view such behaviour as suspicious.

Personally, and regardless of nation, I'm always wary of ostentatious displays of patriotic pride. Historically it's always been the preferred method of enforcing authority and pushing a confrontational or vindictive agenda against those who aren't under the same flag.

Amazing story. Don’t make them like that anymore

Bad enough to make you want to sign the pledge.
