Post Ratings

As discussed here, we've today started trialling a new post rate system.

Previously members could 'Like' a post. Now, they can 'Like' or 'Dislike' ('KOF') a post. Those who have been posting for a while will remember it being similar to the rep system, but without the ability to comment.

The developers reckon it;

• Increases daily posts.
• Improves signal to noise ratio; less short/unnecessary posts
• Improves quality of posts (posters want to avoid negative ratings)
• Makes lurkers useful for something and gives them a means of interaction

And, it can help self moderate - there's a setting that allows 'x' amount of dislikes to place a post in a moderation queue.

We'll be tweaking the system over the next week or two to see if it can work. Be mindful that if we notice people taking the piss with it (targeting members etc) then we'll revoke access and it'll be a mark in the against category for the feature...

I like this feature of the site. It prevents unnecessary posts of quoting the post and saying something like "Great post" or "I agree".

I personally do not use the dislike option though. If I disagree with a post I prefer to counter it with my thoughts, rather than a lazy thumb down.

Good idea. I've been off for a while so missed the trial. I think it's easy to pick out when it's being abused. Sometimes as well a dislike can pipe you down if you need a piping down, which everyone does occasionally.

I like it anyway.

Some absolute virgin logs on at 2am to leave about 300 neg reps to roydo.

He/she actually had to create email accounts/verify them to do it (created a few accounts) - some absolute freaks about.

Anyway, as for Post Ratings - I reckon it'll be binned and replaced with a similar system but with better controls (both user and admin). It's been a very useful exercise though, as after the initial silliness, it settled down but the existing plugin isn't good enough long term to manage on a busy forum in my opinion.

Example of roydo, I can't actually remove all his negative ratings without manually having to go to each post negatively rated and remove it. Nor can I limit how many ratings people can dish out. Basically, it's helped us establish what we need a post rating system to do.

They do mate, unless you have them on ignore, when the neg shows up, but not who negged you.

I think if a single post receives a high volume of negs it gets flagged to the mods.
