I'm delighted with this cancellation. You want your best side on the pitch against sides like City. It was terrible timing for us to have to play a big cup quarter-final without our four best players for the full duration, so I can only see upside in calling this one off. Even if we do not have the big boys back for the rescheduled game (they might be injured again or there might be a holiday in Colombia), we can recover in time for the visit of Christmas Past, David Moyes. Win that and we are building serious momentum.

I'm really not sure I understand why. Unless you're just looking for tokenism? Can you imagine Man City telling Everton 'our squad is riddled with covid but we thought we'd ask you if you still want to go ahead' o_O

That's the rule with injuries. If you don't field a side, you forfeit the game.

With no specific rules in relation to COVID in the competition rulebook, it's essentially an injury.

If City can't fulfil the fixture, they can request a postponement. If Everton refuse it, they forfeit the game, because technically they have enough players "fit" to play the game.

If the Premier League don't like that, the onus is on them to come up with a rule. They won't, because they don't want to be tied down to a strict ruleset which means they lose money if too many games are called off.

If this was a "safety" issue, every time a positive test is called for a club, their games would be postponed. They won't do that, because it would stretch the fixtures and possibly jeopardise the season's length.

This isn't about safety; it's about money. It's as clear as day. If Everton had any backbone whatsoever, we'd demand they set a precedent or give us the three points.

Override what rule? The forfeiture one?

OK, if so, let's see the meeting notes. Again, let's see the threshold needed to override that rule.

It's yet another example of why the last two seasons of the Premier League are a joke. The fact we would have had 2,000 fans tonight as one of only two clubs in a twenty team competition allowed to also makes the whole competition a joke.
Fingers crossed we don't drop back down to tier 3 before Friday then because by Rotherham I'm 100% certain we will.

It's also 125,000 people that have been told they've tested negative when they could actually be positive - Giving them free-rein to go about their daily business

That's more damaging than anything else.
Well yes it could, but without LF testing (remember these are symptom free tests) then it's unlikely they'd have been tested anyway as it's additional capacity.

It's not feasible to roll out moss PCR testing to cover all current testing (PCR +LF) because there simply isn't the laboratory space or expertise to do so.

As I said, LF is simply one tool in the arsenal to work in conjunction with PCR rather than replacing it: knowing if more people have it can't be a bad thing.

We should demand answers at least regarding why we weren't involved in discussions. We were hosting the match, how can they not at least keep us informed?

I think we should be getting the points unless City cannot field the 13 or 14 players needed to fulfil the fixture. But thats not going to happen so I dont know what we can do.

If we ever get a positive test (and I really hope not) then we should demand its called off too.

They had 4+ cases on Christmas Day.

They played boxing day.

They were expecting to play today.

Their statement today says their bubble has been breached.

What is the difference today, vs previous days? It hjad already been breached.

We can only assume it's the number of cases.

For me, they shouldn't have been allowed to play boxing day and their fixtures should have been suspended immediately.

The league aren't prioritising safety, they're prioritising £££ and paying lip service to safety.
I don’t think they should have played Newcastle with 4+ cases.

But things are clearly even worse now so perhaps even the money grubbing league decided it was just too big a risk.

Ask yourself why Villa were not awarded the points when Newcastle had to postpone due to Covid.

If you can't get your employees to act in a responsible and safe manor that causes a disruption of a LOT then that team should forfeit the match. I mean, on one hand we get a tiny bit of rest but it's a bunch of malarkey that they just get to reschedule it when they have a couple players out and they'll be fit for the return fixture.
