Postponment of Premier League fixtures due to the death of Her Majesty the Queen.

They were top but the wheels were coming off a bit, Klopp probably ran out of mentality monsters juice.

In the lead up to the covid break they lost to Atletico x 2, Chelsea, Watford, and struggled to beat West Ham, Shrewsbury Town (replay after a draw), Norwich.

They'd virtually sewn up the league, they had more points at the covid break than Man City had by the end of that season. Before the break there was a chance/danger they could win the league at the Goodison derby with 8 games to go- that's how far ahead they were. The asterisk is a good joke to wind Kopites up, but in reality, they p*ssed the league that season.

My two lads have had all their footy called off. The youngest is only 5, I have no idea what forced mourning will do. Its not like I'm going to sit off doing nothing crying into my pillow, I'll just end up kicking the ball around with them on a field for a few hours.

People have been going on for hours now about how she was so wonderful, how she would always just get on with things, when things get tough she got tougher, blah blah blah. Yet they want us to collapse in collective grief cause she died, at 96, hardly unexpected.

I'm sorry, and I mean no disrespect, but in terms of international historical significance, she isn't in the same league as Gorbachev. He changed the world - rightly or wrongly, with intent or otherwise, by design or happenstance. She, great representative for the UK that she was, sat on a throne and, frankly, represented unchanging constancy.

It may be "seismic" in the UK. But in world history terms, not so much. I suppose it all comes down to how significant one considers the modern British monarchy. By any objective analysis, the fall of the Soviet Union, collapse of the Iron Curtain, demise of communism, and ending of the Cold War just sneaks past the death of a long-serving figure-head British monarch with no meaningful political power. Not trying to play down or intrude on a nation's grief, but in the greater scheme of things...
I'm not a monarchist, you can insult the institution as much as you like.

I'm also not a Little Englander. I'm ashamed of the exceptionalist, insular, isolationist crap that counts as patriotism in this country now - and ashamed of all the terrible things done in the name of Britain over the centuries.

I also think Gorbachov is a figure worthy of the highest praise for what he achieved (though much of it sadly seems lost now). You can count his achievements, and score them higher than the Queen by a huge margin.

But it's not just about that, is it? The way people feel about others isn't driven purely by a scorecard of their achievements.

Ultimately, she meant more to more people around the world than Gorbachov, and has done so for generations.

Put a photo of Gorbechev in all 4 corners of the world most wouldnt know who he is / was .
Everyone knows/ knew who The Queen was .
Undoubtedly the world's biggest celebrity.
One of the worlds biggest events ...ever.

BTW I'm no royalist , they are just facts.

I know, so i don't see the problem with postponements., if it means other teams getting their best players back as well as ours. I think our best 11 is comfortably enough to keep us up and around mid-table.
I agree Stevie, and I know we're focused on our own club but I don't believe our injury list is any worse than most and once we get motoring I believe our squad as a whole is good enough to climb comfortably clear of the relegation zone.
We want to get our injured players back but a weekend break will not advantage us over others.

I don't see the need for postponement of sporting or other cultural events, perhaps outside of the initial 24 hour period after the death and on the day of the funeral.

People have to go to work and attend to all other obligations during this time. Sport and culture is a celebration of life looked at very broadly, and a way for people to honour life and being alive.
I completely agree with this

Spot on. It's been far bigger world news than Gorbechev dying, a lot of that to do with her still being a serving monarch, rather than someone dying of old age when he's been out of the spotlight for years.
