I'm not a monarchist, you can insult the institution as much as you like.
I'm also not a Little Englander. I'm ashamed of the exceptionalist, insular, isolationist crap that counts as patriotism in this country now - and ashamed of all the terrible things done in the name of Britain over the centuries.
I also think Gorbachov is a figure worthy of the highest praise for what he achieved (though much of it sadly seems lost now). You can count his achievements, and score them higher than the Queen by a huge margin.
But it's not just about that, is it? The way people feel about others isn't driven purely by a scorecard of their achievements.
Ultimately, she meant more to more people around the world than Gorbachov, and has done so for generations.
Ha ha.

You take too much notice of what the BBc tells you.

No one around this world...including millions in this country...could give more than a shrug of the shoulders at best at this news.

She "meant" that much.

She was a generally benign figure of soft power. He was an enlightened dictator of hard, nuclear power. Of course she will be easier to like and is a far less polarising figure. That's because she was, basically, insignificant in world history terms (hard as that might be to comprehend for some in a media environment of British exceptionalism and royal celebrity). She is hugely significant in British monarchical history - but that's a diminished currency now in terms of hard power.

Without putting too fine a point on it: people might want to get a bit of a grip over the coming days and weeks. The establishment will use her passing to distract the plebs, once again, from the real challenges of our times. The plebs really shouldn't be useful idiots in that game.
I don't disagree with any of that.

The only variable is what multiple of the Princess Diana übergrief we see. We're a less emotionally repressed - and much more mental - nation than we were in 1997. It could get ludicrously OTT.

It's not what I think about her - and it's certainly not what you think about her - that's informing my opinion on this.

But thanks for your ha has, Dave. Your thoughts as useful as ever.

people complaining bout the cancellation who haven't pre-booked travel/hotels and aren't going the game aren't thinking about the benefit this has to the team. ALL teams will lose a fixture or two in the short term so they all have the same negatives re: fitness (I don't think there will be but I've seen comments suggesting such), but it allows us to get our star striker closer to being able to actually appear in this/these fixtures when they are re-arranged, and our goalie (and a load of squad players).

This is an opportune delay of these games for us if it does happen.

or just as likely he'll be injured again when its re-arranged

As someone who dates a Kiev-born Soviet who grew up in the USA, you are 100% wrong. I've already been asked by several of her family members (in USA, Israel & Canada) if I'm ok, how sad THEY are about it (and how shocked they are when I say that I honestly don't care).

I'm sure you'll come back with something, but stop trying to pass your opinions off as unadulterated fact unless you have actual evidence - which you don't.

Personally, I couldn't give one from a monarchist perspective, but she was someone's Granny, so I feel for them on a human level, (the counter of they wouldn't feel that about me... that just makes me a better human being on that front).

Dunno about that mate, they literally rested 9-10 of their starting 11, all that did was give their squad players 90 minutes to get sharper

Compare that to us missing our starting keeper, Dominic Calvert-Lewin not being fit yet to start and I'll take a postponement every day in that situation.

Use the break to have a behind closed doors friendly to get some fitness in a few
Dunno how an Arsenal flying at the top of the league with a fully fit and in form 11 and needing to bounce bs k from their first set back at United is a good time to play them tbh

I see. I didn’t check the Arsenal line up, just saw they won though. Definitely difficult if they rested most of their first 11 then.

But, they did lose to Man U last week and the other matches were just narrow 2-1s if I remember correctly.

Hopefully they have sense and carry on, from my POV
