Postponment of Premier League fixtures due to the death of Her Majesty the Queen.

Can't see the PL/EFL fixtures proceeding at the weekend if the other home nations league fixtures are going to be postponed. A scenario where it's left to discretion will just mean none of them will want to blink and go ahead, and they'll all follow each other in postponing.

That's understandable and they are in a difficult position with the amount of scrutiny.

I'm sorry, and I mean no disrespect, but in terms of international historical significance, she isn't in the same league as Gorbachev. He changed the world - rightly or wrongly, with intent or otherwise, by design or happenstance. She, great representative for the UK that she was, sat on a throne and, frankly, represented unchanging constancy.

It may be "seismic" in the UK. But in world history terms, not so much. I suppose it all comes down to how significant one considers the modern British monarchy. By any objective analysis, the fall of the Soviet Union, collapse of the Iron Curtain, demise of communism, and ending of the Cold War just sneaks past the death of a long-serving figure-head British monarch with no meaningful political power. Not trying to play down or intrude on a nation's grief, but in the greater scheme of things...
Not every public figure is judged by historical significance though. I would say the Queen is a very singular figure: no power but a head of state for 3/4 of a century. Not only the head of state for one country but many countries(a reduced number of countries by the year mind you). I'm not trying to be a smart arse though but I honestly don't know which death has more meaningful impact on your average Joe: a person vast swaithes of the world have grown up with or a Soviet leader for less than a decade? Answers on a postcard, please.

But it's not just about that, is it? The way people feel about others isn't driven purely by a scorecard of their achievements.

Ultimately, she meant more to more people around the world than Gorbachov, and has done so for generations.
She was a generally benign figure of soft power. He was an enlightened dictator of hard, nuclear power. Of course she will be easier to like and is a far less polarising figure. That's because she was, basically, insignificant in world history terms (hard as that might be to comprehend for some in a media environment of British exceptionalism and royal celebrity). She is hugely significant in British monarchical history - but that's a diminished currency now in terms of hard power.

Without putting too fine a point on it: people might want to get a bit of a grip over the coming days and weeks. The establishment will use her passing to distract the plebs, once again, from the real challenges of our times. The plebs really shouldn't be useful idiots in that game.

Must admit, I was disappointed when I realised the weekend games were likely to be postponed, whilst not a royalist I guess it is inevitable under the circumstances.

I don't think the PL will be up for the bad press of having the games on
The racing and all other sports are postponed today including football matches, yet the racing is back on tomorrow.
Why should football be so different by insisting that we have to have 3/4 days of "mourning", whilst all the toffs get to have their weekends fun in their top hats supping champers and the like.

Absolute virtue signaling if its cancelled and in memory of someone who couldn't give a monkeys about the sport.

people complaining bout the cancellation who haven't pre-booked travel/hotels and aren't going the game aren't thinking about the benefit this has to the team. ALL teams will lose a fixture or two in the short term so they all have the same negatives re: fitness (I don't think there will be but I've seen comments suggesting such), but it allows us to get our star striker closer to being able to actually appear in this/these fixtures when they are re-arranged, and our goalie (and a load of squad players).

This is an opportune delay of these games for us if it does happen.
