What ? Who ?
I swear people say this about every generation of youngsters at clubs all round the country, how many actually make it though ? So far the only two i've seen who look like they could be challenging for the first team are Duffy and Barkley. Baxter hasn't impressed me and i haven't seen enough of anybody else to really be wowed by them.
Oh and Moyes doesn't give youth a chance, as evidenced by his refusal to give Barkley decent runs in games when we were winning 3 or 4 nil at home in the last two months of the season. Chelsea when we were 2-0 up and strolling would be another example.
Rodwell, Anichebe and Coleman currently in the first team. Barkley, Vellios, Gueye, McAleney and Duffy coming through. We then have the likes of Dier, Garbutt, Lundstram, Hope and Green. The academy are Premier League champions. The reserves beat both United and Arsenal away comfortably. And the U18 did the double over United, including a comprehensive 4-1 victory.
Moyes is overly-cautious but he wouldn't put so much in to the youth and reserves if he didn't believe in it. The RS scrapped their youth academy under Benitez, so it wouldn't be unprecedented for him to focus on the first team. I think Stubbs has said that Barkley was given a year with the reserves to catch up on the time lost due to his injury, but that he would be a first team player next year.
