Excellent post, I agree on all counts.

I laughed when someone on CNN said that healthcare for all is just not possible, well it works in the UK its not perfect but it works.
I imagine if less was spent on the military and more spent on healthcare and helping the comman man that the U.S. would become a better country for all Americans and not just the elitist top 5%.

I absolutely agree, the college i attend is pretty pricey, about 50k a year including room and board (and no i could never afford that, i'm here on scholarship), so you can guess that many people here are pretty wealthy. well, the school is full of kids who's parents work for companies like boeing and lockheed, companies that exploit the US's proclivity towards absurdly high military spending.

I can only pray that the fear tactics of the Bush administration will now come to an end, as it was largely the climate of fear that the government generated that allowed them to justify so much spending.

Just throwing this out there, but a world without war is about as boring as a piece of Naval lint.

We get soft and do weird stuff socially without a good war to fight.

It brings everyone together for a common cause, weeds out the softies, gives us hero's and makes ace video games in years to come.

Not to mention funds the growth if inventions you'd never otherwise get. Like the dolly for steady camera movements was actually designed for loading bombs onto planes.

Tally ho.

One thing I've never understood about Presidential elections is how can Obama get celebrities to go on TV and say "I'm voting Obama on election day." or have Bruce Springsteen play a concert in a vote Obama T-Shirt. I've never seen celebrities get involved in the PM elections and if they do it's no where near as much as celebs get involved in the presidential race.

Surely by getting involved they're going to sway their fans to vote for whichever candidate they're backing I can't see why it's allowed to be honest because people who don't know any better will just vote for the person who their idol has told them to vote for without checking any of the manifesto.

Healthcare for all is very easy to fund. Just adding a small % on to every1s income tax and maybe adding more to the high earners would be enough IMO. Yes your right it doesnt really work in the UK, i mean its free, but its a long drawn out process and its a very flawed and under funded system.

I suppose being in charge is like being a football manager, every1 can see the solutions to problems, but the ppl in charge are too busy filling their own pockets and trying to look good, rather than sort out huge problems in the way countrys are run.

Been away for the last few pages but just wanted to say, top thread chaps. Interesting stuff.
Bruce at the moment I cant really think straight the wife is critical and I am mainly just browsing but I promise to debate Thatcher with you at a later date as I witnessed the devastation good hard working people received if I had a choice who to save between Hitler and her I could not decide as both murdered innocent people OK thatcher did not use a gun that would have been kinder

Anybody with a brain can realise that Thatcher was the worst thing that ever happened to this country, she is a vile pig that needs putting down. shame nobody did it before she destroyed millions of lives.

On the war thing, war is only good for one section of people, and that is those that produce bombs, planes and the other assorted death machines.

Did you know ALOT of weapons manufacturing companies were near folding and going out of business during the spring/summer of 2001.
This is fact, you can check it.

These same businesses now, are some of the richest most powerful companies in the world, having produced a multitude of killing things to be used on innocent people in the middle east.

Remember, in the free world, we say Innocent until proven guilty, NOT... "we think they are terrorists so bomb the [Poor language removed] out of them and their next door neighbors just in case..... oh and if you miss, [Poor language removed] it..."

Soemone mentioned Guantamano Bay, that place is slimy black dot on the face of all Americans, while that place is keeping people in detention for years and years with no charge and no trial, no American can talk about land of the free in any way shape or form.

I think its a great choice, although what really worries me is the reason why some people voted for Obama, some interviews people have said they only voted for him because he is black... thats crazy.

.

i quote martin luther king....

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. "

well ive also heard plenty of interviews where the voter chose obama due to his colour .

first calling obama black is disregarding his white origin's , this is racist - he is not black , not white ,he is mixed race.(same with lewis hamilton)to say anything other is racist. in fact even mentioning any colour is racist.its shouldnt be important.

second , martin luther king would be turning in his grave.
wether the person is a black or white man is irrelevant. the character of the person is all thats matters.
if race dosnt matter why are spike lee jesse jackson etc banging on about his colour. (jesse jackson himself said obama wasnt black enough - the man is just as scummy as as a kkk member imo)

it seems racism has not been eliminated but instead has turned on its head.
this needs to be addressed before so called 'positive' racism causes another war zone.

surely obama is the perfect man to set 'equality' straight ?

Obama's now the first black president. Great. Can I assume that as Clinton was in the race with Obama for their party's nomination to run for president and Palin was running as vice president for her party then there is now problem in the US accepting a female president?

Can the US now look at the next social barrier to office. Will those who hold no religious belief be accepted as potential leaders, or will this prejudice remain as it does in the UK?

You keep labouring this point about Obama's colour. So what that people voted for him because he is not white. How many people voted for Mccain because he is is white? I don't think colour is as relevant as you contend.

They've been playing that card since the McCarthy era. First Communism and any related left wing tendancies, then Latin American drug lords and now international terrorism. Problem I see is that foreign policy doesn't seem to differ between Rep and Dem parties.

Not a chance in a million....anyone who stood and said they didn't believe in God would be laughed out of town:lol:.

Really don't think it's a problem in the UK though, Christians over here are a minority and are viewed (rightly in my view) with sympathetic tolerance by most of us :P.

Tony Blair was strongly advised to play down his religious beliefs, and mostly did so while in office.
MP's go through the pretence I think, they have to with the head of state being the head of the C of E but it's all a bit like it was when I was at school, press button A and recite the lords prayer, button B for "All things Bright and Beautiful."
Load of tosh, the human race will be much happier when we evolve through it!

Hope she gets better Roy mate.
