I know i wasnt. I thought you were joking around with yer post.

Mate, I wouldn't joke about being a racist. I mean come on?

Ok, lets move on. But you must understand what a sensitive issue racism is at Everton. Its not something I subscribe to.

I may be misunderstood when I act English, but that's not being racist, its me being proud of my nation, like Obama is over his.

Let's just forget it.

I think America will crumble under his leadership.

He seems to much of a pansy to fight the terrorists imo, at least Bush just didn't give a [Poor language removed] and went steaming in, guns blazing, i can see Obama being too much of a girl.

Not wanting to minimize the subject but here's my interpretation... Cal's original post above which he followed with a second post stating "Queue racist posts." I took his second post as an attempt to quickly say, "I [Cal] am sure that I will be called a racist for making the comments in the first post." I don't think it was in response to you Ghost.

But oddly, the effect that Cal alludes to does exist. To a degree in the US, if you disagree with some of the Obimites, you are shaded as a possible racists as if you can't disagree with the some of the man's stances. This isn't a broad rule but is does happen.

But hey, when Cal responded "yep" to Ghost's inquiry about his intentions it lead to misundestanding. To me, it is a lesson on how the written word doesn't always carry the inflection we intend. Care should be taken around sensitive subjects both in the reading and the writing.

I don't think that Obama has the enough man in him to fight against these terrorists, i feel that he'll go all Gordon Brown on us.

You see this is were the problems lie, if ObiWan ever does something wrong he aint gonna get as much crap as other presidents, the press wont wish to appear racist. This man has opened up a huge can of worms, i feel for him also, hes gonna have possibly the biggest X on his back that any president before him has.

I wont pretend to lie that i know the 1st thing about America or indeed American politics, i have a very minimal grasp about British. I just know that the credit crunch that we are in at the moment was caused by something big happening in America with regards to house prices?

Im not going to get on my soapbox, but i would love to know why we are still spending Millions of Pounds each week fighting a war in a country that doesnt want us anymore. I mean i know why, oil. But i think i read that obiwan was against the war????? So if he can take out the american troops the british will hopefully follow and then he can sort out this little cashflow problem we all having. If he does these 2 jobs, i will be happy.

I don't think that Obama has the enough man in him to fight against these terrorists, i feel that he'll go all Gordon Brown on us.

Well America got a black president and we got our 1st jellyfish PM. But i think your wrong about Obiwan, i think hes gonna have a backbone, i mean its not up to him what action to take, hes got about 50 ppl to advise him on all manner of things, 1 of them is gonna shout "NUKEM" and maybe he will go with that.

You see this is were the problems lie, if ObiWan ever does something wrong he aint gonna get as much crap as other presidents, the press wont wish to appear racist.

The mainstream press is certainly in line to give him every benefit of the doubt. That's for sure. They are in love with him. A study just this week found that the press spent nearly 50% in travel costs following the Obama campaign than they did following the McCain campain. That can be justified perhaps being that he is a groundbreaking candidate but it doesn't say much for the press giving equal time and equal exposure to each candidate. The mainstream press got their man.

I agree, Obama will have to overcome the most unrealistic of expectiations and do it as a black man overcoming any bias that may exist. Every president seems to age at a rapid rate. I don't wish the position on anyone.

Well after reading that i think he faces a different problem, yes the press will love him and then they may go over-board, over exposure, leading to resentment. I dont know what the press is like in America, but in England they raise people up, they shower them with praise and then when they feel like it, they destroy them. Build them up, just to bring them down.

I don't know if our press does that.

The problem with our press is that they simply ignore stories that don't fit the narrative that they're trying to pass off as objective news to the American public.

The MSM (mainstream media) here has pretty much lost all credibility as evidenced by not only polling (of course trusting the polls these days is risky in and of itself) but also how much they're losing in viewership, subscription rates, etc.... Go look a the performance of NYT, CBS, and any other publicly traded news medium over the past ten years. You'd have made a killing shorting their stocks.

Basically, the people are saying "I'll go get my news information from a source I can trust." The rise of the internet and talk radio, in my opinion, will pretty much be how most objective news is dissiminated in the future. The public knows who they can trust and who they can't trust when it comes to relying on the news organizations to relate actual news without injecting their ideological views into the story or presenting the story without a left leaning viewpoint. The MSM can no longer be counted on to be objective.

It's too bad too as there are many good journalists out there who do a very good job reporting news but unfortunately, I think it's too late to stop the institutional rot that's taken hold in the MSM.

I think its a great choice, although what really worries me is the reason why some people voted for Obama, some interviews people have said they only voted for him because he is black... thats crazy.

However, I do think he will be a superb president.

Maybe with the oil hungry republicans out of power we can have a world without war for a bit.

i go to one of the most conservative colleges in the US, washington and lee university, and i'm probably one of the most liberal people you'll ever meet, but it was great last night when myself and the few other liberals on campus broke out the champagne upon hearing CNN declare Obama president.

Btw, CNN did 2 polls, and showed the voting results for people who said that race was a factor in their decision, and those who said race wasn't a factor. the voting breakdown was nearly even for both of them, so I don't think race really changed anything (as many people voted for him because he's black as people voted against him because he's black).

the conservatives are right though, he's been given our support, but the status of america's problems hasn't changed in the least, and he has a lot of work ahead of him.

still, I look forward to, within the next few years:

  • comprehensive health care reform (47 million americans don't have access to routine care, utterly disgusting)
  • getting rid of the george bush tax cuts and closing some of the corporate tax loopholes (and Tx Bill, i'm sorry you're going to have to pay more in taxes, but if you make more than $250,000 a year, then i gotta say I envy you, and would guess that since you make 5 times the median income, you're probably not hurting all too badly right now like a lot of pople are)
  • BRINGING THE TROOPS HOME: american involvement in the middle east has almost without exception produced worse outcomes in the future (dating back to the coup of iranian prime minister mossadegh under eisenhower), and I don't want american soldiers to continue to die just to spare us blushes.
  • Hopefully some greater funding for alternative energy. One of my greatest fears about Barack Obama is that he doesn't seem as determined as McCain to end corn subsidies for Ethanol. Anyone with a background in environmental studies will tell you that corn is not a viable energy option alone, and that money is taking away from R&D into alternative energy. Obama was is in favor of cap and trade, I just hope he has the courage to institute it, knowing that it will drive gas prices up and probably hurt his popularity
  • Closing, or at the very least, modifying policy related to Guantanmo Bay. It disturbs me that Americans have just accepted the horrors of guantanmo bay, and the fact that we've stood idly by gives creedence to some of those NWO conspiracy theories.
I have a lot of faith that Obama can get things done about all these issues, which are all very important to me, but only time will tell I suppose.

also, the possiblity of a 3/5ths majority in the senate is still alive, now that we won the oregon seat. Al Franken might pull out a win in the recount, and the runoff in georgia really is a toss up. It bothers me that Stevens was so widely supported in Alaska, the man is a convicted felon (and may be the first convicted felon elected to the US senate), and he might now be the only obstacle to full control

Excellent post, I agree on all counts.

I laughed when someone on CNN said that healthcare for all is just not possible, well it works in the UK its not perfect but it works.
I imagine if less was spent on the military and more spent on healthcare and helping the comman man that the U.S. would become a better country for all Americans and not just the elitist top 5%.
