Prostitution - Should We Legalise It?

I guess i'm in the tiny tiny minority then.

If a woman (or man) wishes to have sex with someone for the exchange of money i don't see that morally wrong whatsoever.

Sex is a basic human desire, the wish to have sexual intercourse with a fellow human exists in pretty much all of us. Because it is enjoyable.

As long as it is safe and consensual and she was 100% ok with it i honestly couldn't give a crap if my sister wanted to do so. Good luck to her i'd say.

And whats worse, being an honest above board prostitue in a legal and safe brothel, or going out and getting pissed on a Friday night and shagging someone you've never met? Yet the former is acceptable behavior for the nations youth.

The point is that to get a legalisation bill through parliament and the Lords, you're going to face all this and more. You would need a hell of a plan to see off the moralists. Britain is a conservative country, and we Britons don't like change.

Don't believe you would really be happy for your sister to be on the game, mate. Not really. Surely?

Yeah i don't believe for a second it would ever be allowed to be legalised in this country. Same as with drugs, people are too set in their ways to even think about trying it.

I have no problems with my sister sleeping with whom she wants, she is a sensible free thinking person. If she wishes to go out on the pull on a Saturday night and have a one night stand with a stranger because she was single and enjoying it would there be a problem? I would have no moral problems with her if thats what she does to do.

Same as if she was to work in a safe legalised brothel. Obviously if she became a prostitute on the streets today yeah i wouldn't be happy at all. But thats due to the dangers rather than any moral objection.

Why would you not want a female family member to be a prostitute if it was legal and regulated?

Because I hope my family members can achieve more than selling their bodies to men that they would grow to feel contempt for.

I've nothing against prostitutes, I just don't think the majority would do what they do given an alternative. I'm sure there are a few exceptions to the rule, though.

If I had a sister, I wouldn't have a problem, with here having one night stands. Everyone has, or at least had them at one point in their life. It's the money part that's the moral problem with me. Maybe it's a little bit hypocrite, but you have to be a certain type of person to be a prostitute in my eyes. Could never accept my sister or for that matter, girl friend(s) to be that type of person.

Some food for thought;

We condemn women who offer sexual gratification in return for money yet lionise women who seek out rich men to marry for money. And we sell everything from toilet cleanser to cars with sex. For those with sexual hang-ups our society must be like being an alcoholic required to work in a brewery.

Making £1000 a week as a prostitute or minimum wage cleaning toilets?

Of course it might not be an ideal career choice but if it is her choice i'd support that. Doesn't mean i'd actually encourage it but as long as it was her choice i'd have no place to complain about it.

Kinda what i was getting at earlier. I find it highly hypocritical that prostitution is looked down on by society as a whole yet sex is encouraged and used by society as often as possible.

Does society lionise women that seek out rich men to marry them solely for the money? These women are usually referred to as gold diggers and considered, by many, no different to high class prostitutes. Sometimes the media glamourises that sort of thing, but the general population is usually quite brutal about these types of women.

Plus, one aspect about the gold digger is that if she is worth her salt, and in it for the long haul, she offers more than sex. She gives partnership and grows to possess the associated attributes of a wife.

I can see there is a parallel but ...

Just a thought, would people feel the same if their brother rather than their sister became a prostitute now or under a system of legalised prostitution?

Having worked in Amsterdam in the 70s only for a few months,we(English workers) where fascinated by it to see all these woman sitting in windows or outside the sex shops was at the time a young mans dream,But on reflection you have to wonder if the women have made the choice to sell their bodies or has she been persuaded by outside influences, the parasites in society who feed of the vulnerable.you only have to go to Everton valley where asylum seekers were selling their bodies, maybe they had no choice as they were owned in there own country .but local people abused them for bringing undesirables into there backyard as with prostitution comes drugs find a place where the sell sex you always find drugs available as well, even in Kennisington I went to my uncles there on a message I only live in old swan yet two young girls one with a foreign accent offered their services and a guy offered me drugs this was at 7pm on a Friday night by the Holt pub,so No I dont want it legalised I want the young woman of today to be able to walk down a street with out being accosted because they happen to live in a area that is deemed legal for this type of thing .it will not be in the more affluent areas thats for sure, .also Danny I have worked with rapists and its not the sex that gets them off its the control and fear they inflict on their victims.

You don't want it legalised because of the problems associated with it being illegal?

I'd of thought that if brothels were made illegal they wouldn't be on your average street corner on a housing estate where anyone could set one up but would be somewhere say the outskirts of town where they have to be official licensed ones away from built up populated areas. Or in the middle of nowhere like that Bunny Ranch in America.

The whole point of legalising it and regulating it is to take away the drug dependancies and the traffiking which go hand in hand with street prostitution.

Obviously mate but not all are.

also Danny I have worked with rapists and its not the sex that gets them off its the control and fear they inflict on their victims.

Really important point, Roy. Most studies seem to agree that your average rapist is not a sex addict, but a control freak. He's got no control in a brothel, so why would the existence of a legalised brothel stop him being a rapist?

 Ah, the typical media portrayal of a rapist - a sexual control freak predator....

Not all rapists are sex addicts, nor are they all obsessed with control. Some obviously are but a lot aren't. Thats the really important point.

Sometimes, just sometimes, its a bloke who more often than not, has alcohol in their system and its a spontaneous act. Not pre-meditated in the slighest. To put blunt, few drinks+wanting to get their end away. That can not be disputed.

Rape in Nevada (legal prostitution) is amongst the lowest in America. Strange that.

As long as both parties consent then I see it as no business of anyone else how they spend their time. Whether or not we as individuals agree with an act is irrelevant as to whether it should be legal or not.
