Absolutely no proof to suggest any of that is actually true. If James goes it’s not because Benitez or anyone at the club has forced it but because he doesn’t want to be here. He’s gone from Real Madrid and Bayern Munich to 10th place Everton, he did so because he had a great relationship with a manager that’s no longer here.

Suggest you rewatch the presser mate - he won't talk about James/individuals one minute because it's not fair, then waxes lyrical about bloody Coleman?

Everything I have seen from James suggests he doesn't have a problem staying, unless you have seen something different?

His agent could be making the moves, I get that, but it's the inconsistency in benitezs responses that suggests he doesn't want him.

It makes no sense to me anyway to just shut the James questions down - he's still world class, we have a potentially lucrative us tour coming up so personally I would be talking James up, saying he will be a big player etc, even if it's a known fact he's buggering off!

Doesn't make sense, as he should have answered the Coleman question in exactly the same way.

Dull as dishwater for a first press conference that like. I can’t see how this is going to be anything but a horror of season. He’s going to have a hard time motivating these dregs. Can’t see a situation where the 5-6 first team players we need come in this summer.

"to compete for...something."

That said it all to me. Raf is hedging his bets. In the absence of an open chequebook, that is the right thing to do. Regarding James, I can't criticise a manager for wanting to put his own ideas into place and stand or fall based on those. I love James, but he wasn't there when he was needed last season. If Benitez thinks he can get somebody who will be, then he'll stand or fall on such decisions. I expect the new manager to do things his way. We can judge him then purely on his performance and results - and not be hamstrung by other political considerations. Benitez will bring clarity. Whether that is good or bad remains to be seen.

Getting rid of your best players is rarely a good thing.

Having thought on it, I actually think the language he used was spot on.

Previous managers promised all kinds and talked up medium-long term goals from the off. Benitez is adopting a more realistic approach - he'll be well aware of the limitations of the squad already.
