If we finish 8th but go through the season with DCL and Richarlison out for 6 months each we've overachieved despite 8th being where we would normally expect to finish.

We go into this season up against teams with a settled system/manager and have a new manager with a new way of playing and likely formation, no Richarlison for a few games who's 1 of our only 2 goal threats and likely only a few signings who will probably miss the first few games the time we get them in.

That changes everything.
It’s almost like you shift the parameters on a regular basis mate rather than say “I worded that badly “ or “yeah I was wrong “ .

Every manager since Moyes has had a "transition" first season in most fans eyes and Benitez will get one with me based on current transfer business.

If we go out and sign some top players he'll have to have us fighting for top 7 but if it stays as it is then 10th+ is acceptable first season.

Ridiculous.

We were pushing for Champions League at Christmas, and Europa as late as April. Only our home form let us down. I'm expecting at the very least the same from the new manager, given it's the same players.

We get some new quality players given how amazingly super-duper our new manager is, I'm either expecting silverware or Champions League, minimum.

This is the price of bringing that man in to manage us.

You just expect Europe in the managers first season mate and if he doesn't get it will boooooo because you dont like the fella whereas you no doubt gave Carlo the benefit of the doubt.

We literally get out played by every side in the top half including the likes of West Ham. Hell we got taught a footballing lesson at home by relegated Fulham.

Our squad is bang average we massively over achieved at the start of last season.

Exactly. We started well, then showed our true colours and then maxed our points for most of the second half of the season. It reminded me of Allardyce's season when we won loads of games 1-0 with our only shot while the opposition missed 5 open goals. We were one of the worst teams to watch last season, I just hope we don't play as dully as last season. For me that's the first job. Even if we come 12th but dish out a few drubbings I'd probably take it.

We beat Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal, Leicester and Liverpool last season. Only teams we didn't beat above us were the Manchester teams.

We lost the most points to teams below us, with tepid performances - thinking we had already won. We've shown quite blatantly the players we have can beat anyone on their day, just need some humility and backbone.

I'm expecting your love interest to rectify this.

We beat teams who we were scared of, as we played backs to the wall football and scored from set pieces. As soon as we played teams we were"supposed" to beat, we couldn't dictate, and because they worked harder than us we struggled badly.

By playing defensive counter attacking football mate. The moment we have to actually be on the front foot and string 2 passes together we get tonked by the likes of Burnley and Sheffield Utd.

Yet some on here wanted us to appoint a expansive attacking playing manager with this squad of misfits lol

Not at all I just don’t think 9th is overachieving and I don’t constantly shift the goalposts.

I’m happy with slow and steady improvement which is actually what I keep saying , I know it suits you if I say other stuff but if I don’t I appreciate you’ll just make it up .

With current squads I would expect us to finish between 8th and 14th. 8th would be"winning the league" for us.

Agree, we had luck on the road, for the most part we were utter garbage.
