That's why transfers should be done by a dof managers usually sign players for the here an now

That's my worry with Benitez. He knows he's not going to be here for a long time so will try to make short-term gains in the transfer market - don't expect any young, unproven players to come in whilst he's in charge.

Well I don't think he's actually *that* bad defensively, he's just better going forward. He's been in and out at Inter. He's not really a wing-back. He didn't play there a lot for PSV and it was really only at Euro 2020 that he played game in game out there, and now has been asked to do that role again with Inter but in a very specific way.

He'd have been a good addition. I still think there was more to it than just Benitez saying no, but it does seem Brands had a deal lined up.

I think it's a case that Brands spent all summer chasing 1 player and neglecting the rest of the squad. Then it turned out that the club couldn't afford Dumfries, so it was a complete waste of time.
