I’m pretty sure Pep will have a massive say on who City sign. But they can pretty much be guaranteed to get their number one targets. In many clubs I imagine the DoF draws up a list of options and they agree with the manager who they want to sign.

It doesn’t work if, like it seems happens at Everton, the DoF is completely ignored by the owner and manager.
It worked at this club when Silva and Brands worked together..Digne/Mina/Gomes/Richy in all good buys that season good money right age.
Then they failed to get the 1st choices in and Silva got sacked.
The we appointed Ancelotti who got his way with Allen and James.

You think? You could be right, but I'm wondering what mental cases are letting these people make decisions on signing players when they employ Klopp and Guardiola?

Put yourself in the shoes of an owner. You're paying Pep Guardioala, arguably the best football manager in the world, a small fortune to manage your club. Why would you have a director of football deciding what players to buy?

I'm not arguing that executive, scouting and infrastructure don't need oversight, but It's just my opinion that the traditional DoF role - as in the DoF signs the players, the manager picks the team - is outdated now.

No Director of anything will last for more than 3 seasons without a good manager(s) now anyway. There's too much spotlight and scrutiny. It won't bring the stability it was intended to create as a model.

These are just my opinions of course.
They got the fella from Barcelona in before pep didn’t they ? I’m sure they did

Of course Klopp and Guardiola input into it, but their job is to coach the first team - if it were left up to them they would buy players who would improve the first team right now, because they are ultimately judged on results

The role of a DoF is to protect the future of the club too and look to make sure that players who are signed will have future value and not be dead money after two years etc

Also, a head coach shouldn't have enough time to be an expert in the transfer market - they should be consumed with the first team and not have enough time to oversee hundreds of scouting reports etc

The point is, in modern football, the job (if done properly) is too big for any one person

A good director of football almost goes unnoticed - Beguiristain was there long before Pep, Michael Edwards has been an enormous success at Liverpool, etc etc
You look at the way the RS are and there youngsters play the same way as the 1st team who play a set way. So when they come in they fit perfectly in to there system. You seen it in the cup with there kids.
We have no set style of play, we don’t buy players who fit that style and we still got a load of wage stealing rubbish players

The mental cases that said sign Salah when Klopp was far from convinced. The gobshite has previously given credit for this signing to his DoF or Sporting Director whoever that is , I don't care.

But yes both City and the RS have a DoF

Michael Ball spot on in the Echo. He’s setting the team up to fail. They’re no world beaters but they’re beaten before they go on the pitch. Not trying to win games, cowardly. They’re [Poor language removed] but can do better than set up against Palace like they were playing prime Barca.

He’s making big decisions but seems to be an assumption that big decisions equal good decisions.

Wouldn't be surprised if it's all his masterplan to get to buy players he wants. The old "look, I can't work with these, so give me more"

He's already got control of the club and Mosh. So he'll get his way.
