I just think he doesn’t see club name, badge, history, he doesn’t see player name either. He’s just a completely emotionless robot who sees the team as a machine with 11 parts that all need to function in a certain way to get what he wants. If a player can’t play their role as a cog 9 times out of ten on a match day then he’ll just replace them with someone who can.
That’s probably why it didn’t work for him at Madrid or Inter. He just saw players on a pitch needing instruction whereas they were sides wanting to be built around Ramos and Ronaldo regardless of what the manager thought.
Fortunately at Everton we have no such issue as none of our players have any standing in the game to demand this sort of treatment, they all need to do what they’re told and that means it could therefore be an ideal environment for Benitez. He couldn’t care less if you’re James Rodriguez or Anthony Gordon, and he’s certainly not about to allow a load of structural lapses to accommodate a player who only contributes offensively.
It could also be a great chance to rid the club of its inferiority complex. He’s not going to be buying into any sentimental stories about little old Everton or the people’s club. In his cold view of the world he probably sees no logical reason why 11 men wearing blue and white can’t be better than 11 men wearing any other kit if he has the time and investment to get the quality players he wants.
It might not take many fans with him, and it probably won’t be very exciting, but a couple of seasons of Benitez clinically dismantling the amateur edifice at this club, and putting in place a functional fit professional squad that can challenge for Europe, rid of the ‘Everton that’ mentality, would be the best few years bit of work anyone has done at the club since Martinez’s first season.
