He's just spent a reported £17m on a left back. So 1.7m is not an accurate argument really anymore.

Now he's in sole charge of transfers, I'm expecting a good fee for Digne and judicious use of funds to bring in a right back and midfielder. I'd be seriously impressed if he brings in a competent forward too.

Questions will rightly need to be asked if we retain Digne and no other players come in.

He won’t bring a forward in, as he’s too stubborn to admit he got it horrendously wrong with lardarse Rondon.

Honestly, if he'd lost seventeen or those seventeen would you say the same? Now, before you say otherwise I know it's not that situation, which is a fair point.

However, you can't ignore form simply because of what has gone before; you can add mitigation and consider all factors, but it can't be entirely ignored.

The point of the board antics and whatever else can't be ignored too, so let's look at it objectively with everything considered together in an objective way.

Some fans will have never accepted Benitez and we all know that. The problem is that there's lots of fans who did give him a chance, who are concerned.

Are they wrong to do so? For me, no. As @roy vernon mentions, we're defensively worse than last season and this is a perceived strength of his.

You're right there. My point was that his start here wasn't too bad. It was after the 2-1 defeat to the RS at Analfield where results took a downward turn.

He never really recovered from that and only victories against West Ham and Wimbledon kept us up. Basically, 75% to 80% of his time with us was a failure.

The form hasn't been good enough but thats solely not down to Benitez which the same fans hammering him would be acknowledging if it was one of their personal favs in the dugout.

The players themselves, injuries, decisions such as VAR screwing us out of a clear pen against Spurs, Mina's winner against Utd etc. all have to be taken into account if you're giving a balanced view.

We've have sod all luck all season truth be told from players making daft mistakes like Godfrey who was recovering from COVID, VAR, DCL/Richarlison being out months between them.

Come the end of the season if we are still 15th I'll be concerned but when we had a fully fit side out we were 6th in the table even with issues like the zonal marking which look to have been fixed somewhat.

Yeah, possibly, but if he can shift Tosun there's a space there to be filled. Works for all. Can quietly ignore the incredible slugman and save face, shift that waste of skin with a bad wig, and maybe even find a player.

God I'm feeling optimistic / unrealistic this New Year. Think my missus has spiked my coffee with opium. Peace ✌

That’ll wear off once Potterball runs us ragged tomorrow.

However, I’m eagerly anticipating a “ new “ excuse from his cult, the excuse of 17 Days Without a Game.

Just watching the ‘sound of music’ and it struck me…

When this sad period is behind us, it would be interesting to form a rogue"s gallery of all the infamous bad signings we perpetrated over the past few years. The result should be displayed all around the corridors of power and management as a reminder and a warning for future administrators.

Tottenham is a fair call. Arsenal is miles off and, in my opinion, Chelsea's European trophies far outweigh the few titles difference between us. Winning a title 2 centuries ago is worth less than a Champion's league. Besides, they've won loads of domestic cups too.

Like it or not, Arsenal and Chelsea are bigger clubs than we are.

9 league titles and record seasons on the top flight says otherwise.
