Referees v Everton

It was obvious from the start that VAR would absolutely not even out the playing field. But it's actually been way worse than I expected with the inconsistencies as to what constitutes handball, how lines are drawn across the field, the fact that obvious decisions ignored by the referee are also ignored by VAR for the smaller clubs, etc. It's such a beautiful way for them to control the league table exactly as they want it to end up. This might actually be the first season where VAR, on the final day, causes a team to go down.

I do not believe in any conspiracy theories, I believe there is a rational explanation for everything that happens. There is no big Sky conspiracy involving referees to ensure the top six get given the benefit of the doubt or even worse against the rest of the league. It is simply that these referees are just very poor at their jobs. The foul on Richy today wasn't committed by a top six team, it wasn't given because the referee is just incompetent.
They do give the top teams things they don't give others and they are reluctant to punish them, not because of a conspiracy but because it is easier for them to act in that way. Think of the scrutiny they would come under if they started administering the rules properly, think of the backlash from the pundits who generally come from those top six clubs. There is no refereeing conspiracy but there is refereeing incompetence and cowardice.
What has that got to do with it?

Salah would have got a penalty whether the referee was competent or not. VAR would have made sure.

The old “swings and roundabouts” adage, the idea that if you have a terrible decision go against you you will eventually get a terrible decision go in your favour, is just not proving to be the case with us.

Is it a case of the powers that be wanting us to go down or is it just exceptionally bad luck? Even my mate, a Brentford season ticket holder, conceded today that Richarlison was fouled in their box on three separate occasions, twice by Sorenson, a guy who was booked really early on for a truly awful challenge. So at half-time we should have been going in at least two goals to the good and with Brentford down to 10 men.

Another apology will probably be issued, as it was when we were robbed of a point by the champions. But apologies aren’t going to save our club.
In the words of Diana Ross - I'm still waiting.

I am saying it is not a conspiracy, they haven't met as a group or indeed with other interested parties and formulated a plan to cheat on behalf of the six top teams. I do not believe there is a cabal in operation.
However I do believe the current group of referees are not good enough to enact the rules of the game as they are currently being interpreted. I would love for them to be allowed to use their discretion, I would like to see them stamping out diving, I am a firm believer in a player being made to stand up, the rules of the game don't say it is a penalty if you are touched.
I would like to see all the holding that goes on from corners or free kicks into the box stamped out but it would appear the referees have been told to allow minor shirt pulling to go on in the interests of keeping the game flowing. If they gave a few penalties or free kicks when it happens players would quickly catch on. When referees are told that minor holding can go on we get the situation with Richy yesterday, the referee not only has to see the holding he then has to make up his mind is to whether it is significant or minor, today's referees aren't good enough to get those decisions right. Time for the authorities to cut their cloth etc. we don't have the calibre of people refereeing games to allow them the level of discretion they are currently being asked to do, time to go back to the simple rule when a foul is a foul. It is the same for VAR, they say they need it to be a clear and obvious mistake by the referee before they can intervene, again they are asking for discretion from people who do not have the ability or the fortitude to make those decisions.
As for top teams, they are going to get fewer decisions awarded against them as they have better players and better systems so they don't get caught out so often and have to foul. But more meaningfully they get the most coverage, have the most clout, and have more of their ex players acting as pundits. It is more difficult for referees to give things against them. Referees will be vilified in the media, the bigger clubs will use their influence against a referee who goes against them. It takes a braver man to give a penalty against Liverpool than it does against Everton. Unfortunately we don't have those brave men refereeing, they are cowards.
No conspiracy just inability and cowardice.
Really?

They never stop fouling but don't get penalised for it which is why they always seem to win the 'Fair Play Trophy'.

It’s the Premier League and their referees who are both responsible for this farcical situation were they are blatantly not giving the correct decisions to certain clubs. It absolutely stinks of corruption. Even before the season started the wheels are in motion to favour the top teams with a rigged fixture list. They are a disgrace.

That’s excellent, transparency and the speed of the descion making. The Prem refs would have taken about 5 mins to come to the same conclusion.
It’s a clear red so they would’ve likely debated it for 5 minutes, had 12 different angles reviewed, and if it was one of the big 6 at fault, convinced themselves it actually wasn’t a red because his foot was only raised 2 feet off the ground and the other guy should’ve respectfully gotten out of the way.

The idea that decisions can be subjective needs to disappear. Watching the Europa league final and there have been at least 3 yellow cards not given. Pundits reasoning is the refs allowing the game to flow.
But in a world were accumulation of yellows mean a ban and we want every team treated the same then every foul that warrants a card as by the rules must be given.
Prime example is us getting yellows for simulation when players do it every week and the ref just waves play on.
If this doesnt happen then individual refs will make favourable decisions based on their personal opinion and 'smaller less easy on the eye' sides will suffer, us being one.

I don't think that the poor decisions are definitively match fixing in a 'money in the back pocket' kind of way, but nor do I think that it is plainly down to incompetency of refereeing.

After taking some time to think about the officiating over the past few seasons and the introduction of VAR, whilst also witnessing the rise in 'clickbait' media outlets such as TalkSport (this will be relevant in a second)...

My opinion is that the controversial decisions made on the pitch by referees and in the VAR room are semi-deliberate in order to generate conversation in the football world. I think that VAR has been brought in to control the decisions in a match, in order to suit the narrative that the PL want, but NOT correct wrong decisions to the letter of the footballing-law.

Fans talking about poor decisions and it being discussed on Talk Sport etc., is essentially money in the back pocket of the Premier League, by generating interest/conversation and ultimately resulting in increased TV audiences, merchandise and ticket sales. Because fans will ultimately want to tune-in, so they don't miss out on the next controversial talking point. This is basically aligning with a Premier League strategy to become the most-popular/talked about/watched league in the world = more money for the PL = more money for clubs to spend through TV revenue = more world-class players in the league. See: Haaland transfer.

In addition to this, a point which has been talked about recently, is the need for the TV broadcasters to have a product to sell all the way up until the last day of the season. It's no good having City wrap up the league in March and 3 teams relegated in April. If this was the case, who would tune in and give Sky Sports, etc., their hard-earned money to watch a pointless game at £30+ per month?

So ultimately my concluding point, is that the poor refereeing is deliberate (but not direct match-fixing or favourable/biased to any one team) in order to continue the cash cow that is the PL. To sell a product.
Nah. If a truly, truly crap VAR decision was given against the RS then that would create even more clickbait. Never happens though.

I’ve often bought refs should rotate. Some refs are refereeing teams between ref, fourth official, VAR, numerous weeks in a row. Some are training with teams in the summer. They call players by their first name like they’re mates.

The whole thing needs to be restructured. They don’t want that of course because then they can’t fix games.

Mix the refs up, mix the VAR up, give teams a VAR appeal each game when the ref has missed it, post match press conferences for referees, fines for repeated obvious ‘errors’, random allocation of refs nearer the time of the game, rotation with international refs.
Are you a RS?
