I think we have to be competitive in both. Everyone knows it's an easier run after that. But if we get whacked, the players confidence goes. If we are competitive, confidence will grow.

With Lampard, any momentum we could have had just got shot down with feeble displays.

I'm sure Dyche will be aiming for 2 clean sheets.

But you are right, a heavy defeat will be hard for him. Call me mad, but I think he may set us up to do a little better than people think.
You’re mad :)

It seems to me that most of the optimistic calculations ( not all ) seem to relay on enough of the other teams losing while we gather draws and a handful wins, (hopefully)
This almost certainly won’t be the case.
In fact after the next two games which
I can’t see us getting anything out of , that 2 or 3 point deficit between us and relative safety could conceivably have increased to 8 or 9 points.
We are currently not only one of the two worst teams in the PL but one of overall worst team in the league structure.
In truth my morale is gone to be honest.
I am looking to the slow process of building a team out of the disparate parts we currently have so that we have a decent chance of getting out of the Championship by promotion rather than demotion.
Sorry for the pessimistic outlook.
It’s not pessimistic on what we have seen in the first half of the season. However, we do have some decent players, low on confidence and direction, but maybe Dyche can get them going. If that happens we have a chance

I think the problem is that while we do have some half decent players they don’t complement each other.
We are not a team.
Our worst problem by far is a lack of creativity and the ability to score goals.
I can see Dyche sorting the defensive but I am dubious about his ability to increase our goal return, it’s never been his forte.
And without goals we won’t win , and without wins we get relegated.

How many points does it normally take to stay in the Premier League?

But how many points will the sides above need to aim for to ensure they are not relegated this term?

The general assumption is that 40 points is the magic number to aim for in order to ensure your survival.

However, throughout much of the Premier League’s existence, the 40 point mark was often not needed to secure saftey.

When were 40 points or more needed to stay in the Premier League?

Since the Premier League became a 20-team league from 1995/96, 40 points or more has only been needed on four occasions.

In 1996/97 and 1997/98, the 18th-place teams finished on 40 points, meaning 41 was needed to guarantee safety.

In 2002/03, 18th-place would finish on 42, meaning 43 points were actually needed - this is the most any side has had to earn to ensure they staved off relegation in the history of the Premier League.

Then, in 2010/11, 18th place would garner 39 points, meaning the magic 40 mark was actually needed then.

What are the average points needed to stay in the Premier League?

Outside of the above, 34 points were needed on four occasions, 35 on four occasions, 36 once, 37 five times, 38 once, 39 twice and 31 once back in 2009/10.

This works out at an average of 35.7, so essentially 36, points needed to stay in the Premier League each campaign.

Using numbers and math to explain yourself. What a pathetic attempt. You should be ashamed of yourself!

40 has been generally seen as safe. Below 35 and you are in very deep trouble. In between is a guess. I am also not sure I would look at it from the perspective of getting one more than the 18th place team. I think it is better to look at the 17th place team points because they are the bottom rung you must reach. If you have 35 in 18th and the team in 17th had 40, then you needed at least 40 or you were relegated. I suspect if you look at it that way, the 17th place team usually gets much closer to 40 than 35.

This Arsenal game is the most important game in our club's illustrious history to date.

Every red I know is desperate for us to lose this one.

We just get behind the lads like we did at the back end of last season.

Goodison needs to be rocking.

Frankly our squad is dire, but the players aren't deliberately playing poorly.

If ever this grand old team needed our support it's now.
Wholeheartedly agree.

If we can attain at least four points from our next three home games that will stand us in good stead.

Lose them all, though, and we will be heading to the lower leagues to be another Tranmere. Or possibly even another Bury.

We fans helped to keep this great club in this division towards the end of last season. When we got behind the players we couldn't stop winning.

We must do it again. We simply have to maintain our top-flight status, or we will go the way of Portsmouth or worse... except unlike Portsmouth we will have a half built stadium rotting away.

So, after a fantastic time away in Devon, it's now back to the realities of everyday life, and part of that is watching how Godawful Everton Football Club really are week in, week out!.

We won't win today, that's for sure. I'd love to be proven wrong, I really would, but I sadly cannot see it happening.
