The odds are very high based on what happens to most clubs who get relegated, that once you go down you STAY down for some time. The data and odds indicate relegation leads to worse times for clubs, not better ones. Yo-yo clubs like Norwich can do it because they have a strict budget while in the PL and they don't have to unload all their talent when they go back down. We are in such FFP distress that if we get relegated we will offload everyone to make up for losses and have very little left to spend on talent. I don't think 95% of our fans know just how bad things are getting in the lower leagues in the last decade. It's terribly dire.
In fairness we can and will further improve our finances in the summer with regards to wages once we lose Mina, Davies, Doucouré, Townsend and possibly Coleman too. That's a good £400k off the books. We'd surely at least look for buyers for Iwobi and Keane to get a further £175k or so off the wages. We'd have a take a bit of a gamble to use whatever money we can get to bring in better players into the XI to replace the likes of Doucoure and Iwobi, but that's hardly a difficult challenge if you just bring in a half decent Championship midfielder in. But we would need to strengthen as this current squad for me also struggles in the league below and possibly League One too. It's a genuinely awful squad.

To add to this, The Athletic ran an article a few weeks ago that claimed that Moshiri/the board had 'provisions' in place for possible relegation. Quite what that means exactly I'm not sure, but hopefully either way it's an iron clad plan that'll prevent us from being financially crippled should the worst happen.

I think this is partly why Thelwell is here though. If you look at his background he is much more of administrator type than what most on here think a traditional DoF should be. When he was at NY Red Bulls he went there because they had massively overspent and was tasked with cutting the squad whilst still maintaining the clubs playing status. He halved the clubs wage bill and took a few loan players over from England and they were ok after a while and he left and went to Wolves where he was mostly doing stuff with the youth behind the scenes as lbh we all know it's Mendes who brings players in there.

We need to get at least 10 players out of the door to get our wage bill anywhere near a workable Championship level. Don’t forget the likes of Tarkowski are on £100k a week. We’d probably have to try and move him on but at that salary I cannot see anyone on earth being interested.

Nowt like looking over your shoulder

Teams are winning games they shouldn't be expected to

We are losing games we are expected to win

I just want to fast forward til end of season

Put us out of our misery - one way or the other
I sent an e-mail to Mystic meg last night to see if she could tell me the league positions at the end of May oh wait a minute

Feel like "the finances will look better next year" has been getting said for the past 5 years now. The finances don't start to look better when you sign new dross to replace the old dross. Everyone said it'd be better this year with Delph and Co gone but then we went and signed Maupay, McNeil and Coady
Maupay, McNeil and Coady whilst poor have not lost huge value compared to the likes of Gomes, Iceland, Tosun, Bolasie etc…

Pickford and Onana definitely go if we are relegated. Possibly Calvert Lewin too

To be fair, we should be able to survive the loss of all three. Let's face it, it will only be the loss of two. We've already been doing without one.

Onana is an obvious cash-in. He doesn't bring us any goals and he'll fetch a decent fee. No brainer. We won't be keeping the England goalie either in the second division. And if he isn't able to keep us up this season, well, his attractiveness to us diminishes rapidly anyway. We can replace with a good Championship keeper.

That's a very good point about Onana. Many teams would be able to afford having him in their side and not contributing with goals or assists, but we cannot. I am sure we could make a small profit if he's sold. Pickford I see as an obvious transfer target for Spurs who are looking at a long-term replacement for Lloris, and I am sure JP would fancy trying his luck in the bright lights of London. Desmond Crumpet-Levine, doubtful there would be many takers on account of his injuries, but maybe he can still come good. He's not a top Premier League striker but I am sure, if fit, he could tear it up in the Championship.

Think Calvert-Lewin would be one of few "better" players who does stay due to his recent injury record. He'd be worth far more to us should he get fit and play 25+ championship games and we could afford to keep one or two players on bigger wages if we only go down for a season.

Onana and Pickford definitely go though you're right. Think we'd definitely be saying goodbye to Doucoure, Gana, Iwobi, Mina, and Townsend (some end of contract, some on huge wages) too.

Keane, Maupay and Holgate are the others I suspect we'd be looking to move on due to them all earning fairly big wages whilst being crap. You can bet your bottom dollar Davies gets a new deal though.

Just pickfords new contract will have added about 10-20mil to his value.
So that would benefit us straight away.

He came in last summer so surely has a contract clause
