Yes. I understand people wanting to look back at Ancelotti misty-eyed because of what came afterwards, but his season was an absolute disaster in the context of things. Paying James Rodriguez £200k a week and buying 30 year old Allan for £20m to finish 10th has contributed to our finances being in the sorry state they are.

We've gave the best manager the smallest budget (Koeman and Silva had £200mill a piece) yet his season was an disaster both on and off the field due to 2 players? (Who arguably were/are are better players).

What did you want him to do?

I think Allan has been as bad a signing as many that Koeman made and we could never realistically afford James so I blame the owner and DOF for caving to Ancelotti’s demands on that one.

Again, the two aren’t mutually exclusive. Benitez was an absolute car crash but that doesn’t change what I’m saying, and failing by 3 points is still failing in the context of a gamble.

You're saying the £60 odd mill Carlo spent was a huge gamble on top of the £400mill spent by Koeman, Walsh, Brands, and Silva.

Personally think he bought the better players out of that crop of money and we'd be nowhere near this predicament in the league if he'd stayed on as manager because of it.

One is a matter of opinion, the other is true. But that is only on the back of having Mina, Gomes, Delph, Siggurdson, Bernard sitting on £90+ a week.

It's a mess financially way before Carlo got in.

Two of those players have been mainstays for us in our worst ever season

I agree, I’ve never suggested it wasn’t. But he has contributed in a small way too. The blame for the state of the club doesn’t ultimately lie with him, I know that.

Yeah they all did. Any buy did.

Bottom line for me was that we should never have had multiple players on £90-100k a week regardless of quality. You have 1, your best player, everyone gets in line with that.

United have the same issue. Arsenal did too until they just started cancelling contracts.

For us, it's killed us

The priority for years should’ve been getting players out the door before we added expensive luxury players. The fault for that lies with Brands and his inability to sell players. We’ve been paying players £90k a week who are nowhere near the match day squad for 3 years, loaning them out only for their loan club to see how bad they are and send them back.

100%

Instead we just wait for the contracts to finish.

I'd like to know how Arsenal just took the hit with Aubamyang, Ozil, Luiz, Willian, Sokratis and cancelled their contracts. Aubamyang got paid £7million to cancel his.
