One of those five to six thrashed us 5-2 at Goodison. The side just above us (Brentford) beat us comfortably. There aren’t currently 6 worse sides, the league table tells you that.

Agree, the table were 15th, I think that's about how good we are currently.

If we are really lucky and do some smart business this transfer window we may improve. Its a big if though, given our patchy recent record on transfers and the challenge of expecting players to come in and perform immediately.

We really don’t have a top seven squad though.

Our first eleven when fit is good, but below that the quality quickly drops off. Add to that the calamitous injury list and you get what you get.

The team finished tenth under Ancelott and has had a negative net spend since then with glaring holes left unresolved. Profit and Sustainability issues have come well into play.

We barely barely won a game from January onwards. Why would we suddenly leap up the table?

We have a best 11 capable of challenging for 7th along with a few other teams. But no one gets the luxury of playing their best 11 for the whole season and as you say, the quality after that drops off. Our players from the bench are mediocre to poor so our squad isn't top 7 standard. I'm not even sure it's top 10.

Hopefully Brentford will be in freefall.
As will be Watford
Norwich are probably preparing for the Championship.
Burnley are in the habit of losing.
Newcastle, well here's hoping.
Leeds ,bubble has burst.
They'll all beat us at some stage,Everton that.
Just get 35 points blues.....yes its got to that, already.

Exactly!

The we have the numbers, but not the quality. If Delph, Tosun, Gbamin and Iwobi were functioning players we would be in a miles better position. Similarly, if Mina, Gomes and DCL had not had the injuries we would not have been in this position. The problem lies in the depth in the squad.

What makes you think Newcastle will definitely escape but fear for us? They've only won one game all season and that was against Burnley who have also won only one game.

We've got 5 wins and recently beat an in form, top 4 side in Arsenal and took away a point against Chelsea with our kids.

This isn't aimed at you now, but the relegation hysteria season after season gets a bit boring from our online fanbase.

We won't go down and those in the bottom 3 will only survive at the expense of Watford, or less likely Leeds, and I personally see all 3 in the relegation zone going down anyway.

….my fear is we could get dragged into it, but we could just as easily be in the comfort zone with a few quick wins. I find it difficult to predict us with Benitez in charge, things could go sceptic if we lose a few on the bounce. Hopefully he can tick points over.

Impressed enough with Newcastle recently to think they will go on a decent run, I imagine they will invest heavily this month.

totally agree, I mean we are actually relegation level arent we and none of this is Benitiez fault is it?

Well right now we have 19 so on your workings we have to get 16, = 5 wins and a draw..

Rhetorical questions:

Is anybody else just mightily pleased that CA signed Dacoure and Allan?
Not been with us that long but so integral. Where would we be without them?
Bottom three.
Look at who we would be putting out on the pitch without them.

Anyway, I reckon 45 points and safe enough. Subject to injury.

In order to get relegated, we'd need to be even worse in the second half than we have been in the first, while at least two out of Newcastle, Burnley and Watford would have to improve significantly. Those are three really bad teams, and I'm not convinced that Newcastle can attract players in this window that will improve them immediately.

The bookies have us at +1400. I think that works out to around 5% chance of relegation, which seems about right. And if we lose to Brighton today it still doesn't change those chances much.

This is a little bit too hypothetical for me. If we hadn't signed them, it means there would have been around 50 million to spend on other players.
