I'll remember to not go to foreign lands fighting to keep the status quo in this country, that's for sure. Quite sad really, I mean most of them died being blindly patriotic and for no gain to themselves or their families as far as I can see. Whilst paying respects for their sacrifice I think that shouldn't be forgotten either.

You're wrong there. Todays army is full of council estate chavs and did a good job under difficult circumstances in Iraq and Afghanistan.

is right...i've got family in the Royal Engineers who've been there and done it: Brit soldiers have a solid rep from all sides for being competent, fair and humane...I only wish I could say the same about US military.

None of that please.

There was no 'blind patriotism'. It was fight the Germans or let Europe be ruled by the Germans. It was fight the Germans or allow the Holocaust to continue. It was fight for the right of the Falkland Islanders to decide their future. It's fight in the Middle East or allow the atrocities to continue.

Do not even attempt to devalue the sacrifice that was made by our men and women.

Yes, it was a fight for all that and more...a fight for the British Empire to avoid losing all it's territories and status as a super power...both of which they lost anyway.

That was Churchill's first concern, for sure.

The reason Churchill took us to war was because we had a defensive pact with Poland. Not because of colonies.

Churchill did not take us to war, Chamberlain did. Churchill then took over and did what was required........

Yeah, you know what I meant, it was just in response to davek's mention of Churchill. The reason the war started was because we were obliged to defend Poland. Not because of colonies.

I think the point is to remember the sacrifice made by the dead, so as we can be free today, rather than arguing over the reasons for wars.

This is the sad part of it. Some would rather denigrate the sacrifice made by previous generations, due to political or ideological reasons, rather than accept that some remarkable people gave up their lives for us. A bit of humility or sensitivity wouldn't go amiss to be honest..........

At the service tonight, Rod Stewart seems to have spent the entire evening flirting with Pixie Lott and making her giggle openly, what is he doing, mucking around with the words in the hymns? Dirty old sod.

totally agree Groucho but wait till we are involved in Syria....war only rewards the people who make millions out of it..and therefore it must always be with us..
