Remembrance Sunday..

At the service tonight, Rod Stewart seems to have spent the entire evening flirting with Pixie Lott and making her giggle openly, what is he doing, mucking around with the words in the hymns? Dirty old sod.
Rod's goosing is a matter of national pride.

Don't dis the Rod.

I'll remember to not go to foreign lands fighting to keep the status quo in this country, that's for sure. Quite sad really, I mean most of them died being blindly patriotic and for no gain to themselves or their families as far as I can see. Whilst paying respects for their sacrifice I think that shouldn't be forgotten either.
A 19 year old living in a 2 bedroom house with a dozen siblings working a menial job is going to war to for adventure, a big gun, a chance to shoot people with said gun and have a load of war stories to impress the local birds with.

I suggest you both stop crying and do a bit of reading.

I agree with Dandy. The idea that millions of largely uneducated lads trooped off to war to advance some noble principle of liberty and freedom is ridiculous.

Some probably did but for the vast majority it was forced on them and the only light was the prospect of a bit of adventure.

The word millions should speak volumes to you. How many do you think expected to come back? I think you do soldiers of all flags a massive disservice.

I'd say pretty much every one of them expected to come back otherwise they would have stayed at home.

Firstly they had no choice. Secondly are you seriously suggesting a major proportion of the poorly educated foot soldiers had notions of true democracy? For a start it barely existed in England before either war so what would have been their point of reference? Life for the working class 100 years ago was terrible. Political grandees were marching them into a foreign land on the back of a fag packet calculation (1st World War).

The soldiers that died in both world wars faced untold horrors. Their memory should be cherished and respected of course. But don't retrospectively make them out as intellectual freedom fighters.
