Richard Keys claims Rafael Benitez tried to leave Newcastle United for Everton twice

His recent record in this very league shows a relegation from a team who needed a "safe pair of hands" and a couple of mediocre seasons. This is without even touching the sides of other reasons why he would be a poor choice.

The relegation was down to Steve McClaren.

Newcastle haven't had 2 mediocre seasons.

Having pondered this I've become more and more convinced that he should be our main target:

Won a shedload of trophies
Experienced
Knows the area
Realistic and attainable
Likely would have a get out clause in china

People say what they want but our dressing room would give Rafael respect- they take the pee with managers like Silva and Martinez but they wouldn't with a bloke who's won the lot.

I think we could get a good 3 years of stability with Rafael to get us back best of the rest and in Europe which is what we should have got post Martinez.
'Knows the area'???????

Razor sharp recruitment there

I have always loved Rafael as a manager. He may have a kind of odd way of looking at it but he gets the best out of his guys. Digs down deep to get results. Would be interested to see how he would line up the squad.
Does he though? He didn’t at Real Madrid!

Small Club he called us.
Why is there even a thread about him.
Some blues... (n)
Is right lad.
Nothing but a poor mans Jose.
Fergie showed him for what he is, deluded cry baby.
Good manager but I’d feel sicker seeing him than what I did when I used to see piss drinking Sammy Lee.

The relegation was down to both of them.

And yeah they have. 10th and 13th is mediocre.

By basic standard of a league of 20 teams then yes, by default it is.

By using the context of Newcastle's limitations both financially and with their playing squad, no, first of all staying up first time quite comfortably is not mediocre.

Then stabilising things while having zero support from above and achieving another mid-table finish is not mediocre.

I am not for having Benitez as manager, not against it either. But to suggest he's had two mediocre finishes with Newcastle just is not true.
