Well what have we done since 1981? Hmmmmm.

Let me think, has Aston Villa done ANYTHING since 1981. Gosh. Oh Bingo! Just remembered one.

We were Champions of Europe in 1982. I knew there was something!

Oh also:

European Super Cup Winners 1982
Premier League Runners Up 1993
League Cup Winners 1994
League Cup Winners 1996
FA Cup Runners Up 2000
League Cup Runners Up 2010
FA Cup Runners Up 2015
League Cup Runners Up 2020

Suprised as the hatred and ignorance on here from Everton Fans. We're such similar clubs and Everton usually highly regarded on our forums.

Not sure if links work on here but this is a fascinating watch that shows how our clubs have basically dominated League Football (invented by Aston Villa thanks to William McGregor) in this country for most of history, with Sunderland also in and about us for long periods too.

Most of the "big 6" are fairly recent interlopers. It's only since the formation of The Premier League we've really dropped out of that elite group.

1: Richarlison isnt going to Villa lol

2: Heres your list without the losers medals...

European Champoons 1982
European Super Cup Winners 1982
League Cup Winners 1994
League Cup Winners 1996

Effectively youve had far less success than us after 1982. But same as us for 25 years.

It would be a concern. But so far two 29 year old Brazil internationals, a 28 year old French international, a 27 year old ex Eng international and a 22 year old who had just been called into the French senior team. Total expenditure about 70m. Hardly spending a fortune on older players.
Carlos is not an international he played for Brazil u23 never played for the senior squad. Zero full cap zero.

I think your issue is the age profile and the wages mate. There will also likely be sign on fees that havent been factored in to the calculations.

Outside of Kamara, it's hard to see much resale value, so they need to deliver in the here and now. 14th place is way off where you should be IMO.

So basically after the European cup in 1982, you've won a couple of league cups?

But yes, Aston Villa are a proper club, who had a proper history before WW2, which is often forgotten.

….and I played at Villa Park in the early 70s but I never scored a goal there. Grand stadium, though. The changing rooms were in the corner of the ground and I remember they had individual bath tubs.

i always like the fact that Everton/Villa is the most played top flight game in this country. Long May that continue.

Why are you listing runners up as some kind of achievement LOL... We know another club not too far away that does this too.

But you missed off Championship Playoff winners 2019 LOL
Most clubs and sites who list "Club Honours" include runners up spots, it's hardly grasping at straws.

The question was what have we done since 1981 and I think runners up in PL and getting to cup finals is an achievement in this day and age looking at the competition to get there. Jesus, getting 6th is seen as something to celebrate these days ?

Will we sign Richarlison? No I don't think so, but equally I would not be falling off my chair if we did.

Other clubs don't seem to have realised yet just how massively wealthy our owners are, and they are very, very ambitious. Wes Edens has a track record of turning "joke" clubs into Champions. Our Chief Exec quite literally wrote the FFP rules.

We've got a number of clubs currently bitching about why their players signed for us instead of a "bigger" club.

We've signed some older players recently but it's been needed as we had the youngest squad in the league, Tyrone Mings was our oldest starter for the previous 2 seasons.

Wherever Richarlison ends up let's hope you spend the money well and don't have to suffer another season like last again. ?

I think Aston Villa and Everton are pretty close in both historical and current terms. They had the edge over us at the start of the 1900's, whereas we had substantially more success in the 60's and, domestically, the 80's, and we've both been crap for a long time.

Neither club is realistically getting relegated any time soon, while you can't really see either club beating a City or Liverpool in a domestic cup final.

Teams like West Ham have overtaken both sides, and you'd have a tough argument on your hands to suggest either could realistically challenge for the Europa League upwards in the next few seasons without huge amounts of luck or investment.

Both have that nostalgic old ground charm, although obviously our days are limited on that which ought to aid our progress, and you'd think many neutral fans would prefer to see Villa or Everton winning things over the likes of the Sky 6/7 whatever it is nowadays.

All of that said, the idea of our better players wanting to jump ship to Villa - without them being forced out like Digne was - is laughable. And vice versa to be honest: we're in no position to think we can just swoop in for players at clubs who performed better than we did this year in the league.

Proper club Villa, unfortunately for them, just like us, they have slipped too far behind the Sky darlings to ever make it into the so called big six as things stand. I feel that football in general and the premier league in particular, are in for some radical changes in the not too distant future. I think it is inevitable that the so called European super league will, in some form, go ahead over the next couple of years. What the rest of us are left with will be a more balanced, competitive competition, which will be more exciting to watch, but unfortunately, it will not have the money available to attract the very top players.

I think, to get back on topic, that the days of Villa, or Everton for that matter, being able to sign players like Richarlison at the stage of their careers when they are established internationals are gone. If Richarlison leaves, it will be to either a top European team or a 'big six' outfit.

Exactly, villa have made some decent signings like we thought we did, maybe they will do better then our signings. I'm not sure they have a good manager tho.

It already is with the new CL format and qualification. The only hitch is that those teams get to bring that wealth back to bear on their domestic leagues. They're basically insured against mismanagement forever.

I got to the stage where I hoped the Super League would happen and they all sodded off.

Speak to a lot of Villa fans and generally The Championship was considered a blast, although I think they have forgotten the first 2 years down there where we weren't that great but going on a long winning run in the final year helps. But just competing in every game you play and not going into games thinking you've got no realistic chance of any result was refreshing.

Of course clubs like ours should be in the top league but it was a reasonably pleasant journey down there and probably an indicator as to what Premier League life post Super League.

Villa are as far from, the Champions League as we are. If he stays in UK will be Spurs, United or Newcastle. I think he might go to PSG or even Real Madrid. Who knows even might stay.

I like Villa and they are certainly a big club.

….and like us a proud Founder Member of the English Football League.

As i oft said, this is a fact that goes unrecognised in this country, perhaps because it doesn’t apply to the Sky Clubs. I do think the Founder Members should have a unique insignia on their kits to recognise their standing in the game.
