2021/22 Richarlison

It’s exactly this type of behaviour that FFP encourages. You have a three year window to make the CL, if you don’t you’re pretty much screwed for the next three years and then 6 years later you end up in the exact same position you were if you’ve been lucky enough not to go down (which is pretty much where we will be in a season’s time)

As you said Villa are currently making a run for it, maybe Newcastle will too, Leicester had a go. It’s a complete closed shop. In the same period the clubs at the top are picking the bones out of you when it suits them and spending eye watering sums on whoever they want. There’s no FFP reckoning for United or Arsenal being poorly run during the same period. They just get another unlimited pot of money to start again with.

It helps if you don’t spunk all your money and go backwards during that window though as well.

The same top manager with a notoriously bad transfer record, who paid £220m for Drinkwater, Batshuayi, Bakayoko, Zappacosta, Luiz and Morata while at Chelsea.

Conte spending £50m on you is generally not a good barometer for a good player.

I never really thought of it that way. We're not talking about Conte in detail here I know, but when you think about it, he does have this fixed idea for tactics - for a pacey, pressing, wide formation and just buys players to fit the system, wins something, and then he's off. does that seem right?

Digne to Richarlison, header, goal.

Better times

I mean I prefer watching Mykolenko to Digne knowing that he has a chance of stopping at least some crosses coming in every game.

Players leave clubs all the time. I’m not sure these were ‘better times’ in fact they were pretty miserable so I can’t really get too bothered about any player who contributed to this period going.

Richarlison was a good player, gave everything, is being undervalued, but it’s not as though I’ve forgotten all those times his second touch was non existent, or when his left foot was completely useless, or when he missed easy one on ones when he had too much time to think about it.

Someone else will come along, they always do.

Evidently, the top clubs do not agree.

Aside from duels, Richarlison does not rank high in the any of the meaningful statistics that many top clubs use to benchmark good potential players.

Do one with your stats, see with my eyes what he offered, it made him Brazils number 9.

I will use Liverpool again.....do you not thing all the top clubs now regret not taking Mane, Salah, Firmino !?!

lol lol lol

Jesus 'kin wept.

Ultimately Dave the main issue with the fee is that we massively overpaid for him in the first place, like we've done on countless countless players under Moshiris time here.

Was 20yo Richarlison on the back of not being highly rated (Vickery) when he arrived, and after one good season at Watford (not spectacular - was a poor second half of that season for him) worth anywhere close to being 40m player - genuine question cos he honestly wasn't at that time, if we'd paid 20-25 total for him max then the deal now wouldn't rub so much.

Same as we did overpay for Kean from Juve, we not only buy junk but when we buy youth we pay as if they've already reached the level they're tipped to maybe get to.

It helps if you don’t spunk all your money and go backwards during that window though as well.

It does help, I’m not saying we didn’t make mistakes but just because we messed up doesn’t mean the system isn’t flawed.

Any club trying it is in an arms race with a club already in the top 4, already with better players, already have access to a market of better players than the chasing club does. So that’s why you see crazy behaviour from teams like us and probably Villa going the same way offering wages and transfer fees to try and get a player who might have been going to a CL team, or prize one from a PL team who don’t want to let them go. It didn’t work but I’m not sure there’s many scenarios where it would have worked. You basically have to be perfect whilst three of the top 6 are utterly useless.

Difficult one this.
Very likeable player, great attitude.
Delivers for us on the pitch, he’s a winner.

Got more that our money back on him and he’s given 4 good years in the meantime.

I can’t escape the feeling that his play is a bit disjointed, he’s neither one thing or the other when it comes to his position and his ball retention isn’t great, these are the reasons he’s not attracted the real big hitters with this transfer.

I would prefer not to sell him but we need a reset button early in the window. There’s a lot of elbow room now in the wage bill and I will reserve overall judgement until the window closes and see how the team looks.
Him not being one thing or the other works to our detriment to some degree. Feel it makes him difficult to shoehorn into a side that is looking to play a certain style - though we obviously don’t have that at present. Going forward though that has to be the plan, so selling him and signing players who are say, out and out wingers or centre forwards, will serve us well. If of course we get the business right and spend the money wisely.

What’s more, he’s never worked well with DCL.

Love the lad but I sincerely hope he does a pienaar and we see him again in blue.
....and so the spin machine is up and running...who's next?
The fact we have had to short-change ourselves with literally our best player rests solely on the board. It's an absolute disgrace. Any other job you'd be moved on with performance this piss poor. Kenwright has been the grand overseer of this abject misery that's gone on for knocking on 30 years now. There simply has to be change within the club. We deserve better as supporters. The reward for the fans basically keeping us in the league this season is they see the clubs best player sold for nowhere near enough because some clowns at the top keep paying wages for players like fecking el ghazi. What is the point?

It is and it's not.

For us he is worth way more than that. To the rest of the footballing world it's probably about right.
Yeah, precisely this. If 50+10 was a huge bargain, why aren’t other clubs in with 55+10? The market’s decided as it always does and I think we’ve got just about the max out of a situation where only one serious bidder came forward.
