Ridiculously bad recruitment

last season the focus was on how many goals we were leaking for fun

hence why we brought in Tarkowski (free) and Coady (loan)

as Carragher recently stated about Van Dijk the reason why he was so effective in the past few seasons is because of the protection he had from the midfield in front of him. It was clear last season that our Defence had very poor protection, for example in the 5-2 defeat to Watford at home we had Allan and Davies in central midfield. Even Doucoure recently has been very poor. This probably explains why we brought in 3 central midfielders in Gana, Onana and Garner.

Due to FFP and having no money to spend i guess the majority of the richarlison budget was used to try and solidify the Defence and Midfield and thinking that Dominic Calvert-Lewin would be fine this season that we wouldn't need to re-inforce the attack much and hence why we only signed McNeil and Maupay.

the problem is we needed to invest heavily in the playing squad, at least 200 mil + but we could not do so due to FFP and in the end we ended up going to poundland to try and find the best bargains we could from Burnley, Wolves and Brighton.

They basically gambled and hope that the sale of richarlison would not have a massive effect by banking on Dominic Calvert-Lewin's fitness which has horrendously backfired.
This I agree with - the major recruitment mistakes were made from 2016-2020, resulting in a much smaller budget now due to FFP and a squad that is too small and low on quality, signings like Onana, Garner, Patterson and Mykolenko should be given time to bed in but we have to throw them into the squad due to severe lack of depth

We can't expect all signings to work out but I would question the viability of McNeil and Maupay, if the squad was bigger then they probably would have been good squad players, but again we are reliant on them to be a key part of the starting 11

The recruitment is awful and short sighted we are obsessed with names over talent and EPL experience over overseas potential and the financial position our esteemed board have driven us into means we can't afford good players even if we scout them.
I know what you're saying but there's more to it than that. Of our more recent signings Patterson, Onana and Mykolenko have come from outside the PL, and going back further some of our biggest duds (Klaasen, Gbamin, Sandro, Tosun etc) have too. It doesn't seem to matter where we get them from, we just consistently fail to identify the right people. Many of them seem really obvious too, it only takes a couple of viewings to see that they don't have the attributes we need, which suggests there's an issue with the scouting.

Walsh, with a very decent pedigree with Alex Ferguson wanting him at Man Utd as DOF.

Brands, who looked the part in a suit.

They weren't right, no, no.

But the new guy. He's the one. Not sure why - Jorge Mendes ran the show at Wolves but that doesn't matter, it doesn't matter he's a kopite either - the new fella wrote a book. He'll sort it. 120 point plan, or something.

Maybe the issue is the owner does whatever he likes, or a board who make, or endorse bad decision after bad decision.
I still believe Brands wasn't the issue and the club probably missed a good opportunity with him

We need Moshiri and the board to stay away from the footballing decisions and allow Thelwell to do his job.

And by the sound of it he has a busy one filling up gaps in positions due to Brands leaving and people not wanting to work for the fat Kopite.

Exactly. Brighton as a perfect case in point.
That lad who scored the first goal cost around £5m I heard. We will never have sustained success at the sharp end of the league without next level investment but it is possible to be competitive without it.

We are not a rich club that has the revenue to spend on top players, we don’t have a best in class recruiting network and we don’t produce or recruit young players.

The recruitment and talent scouting at this club has gone from fairly decent under Moyes to absolutely abysmal.

The fact that the world and his dog knew we needed forwards after the last transfer window and now post a World Cup and months to scout and plan we are linked with Danny Ings and his infamous knees says it all.

Where is the scouting ?
Where is the planning ?

Why are either sides with much smaller budgets able to scout and sign talents and we’re looking at broken rejects ?

Kenright is stuck in past... Players that were good and fit once stay in his head and he never updates the software. Clubs see us coming and make room in their wallets

He’s busy filling up positions because it is easier to give your mates cushy jobs at Everton than actually look after the first team.

I'd give the job part time to @Zatara who seems to know every world star from the age of 12 onwards and @Nymzee who has a bit of European pedigree, finger on the pulse of the Germans and French.

I'd then oversee the 2 of them, earning quadruple what they earn which would be spent in lap bars and my other favourite pastime, which is knitting jumpers for little dogs
