Turns out he actually said this in January:

With disarming frankness, Martínez accepts most of these charges. “As Everton manager, I take responsibility; we have to be a winning team,” he says. “We should be winning games and winning titles, not just looking to compete and hope for a win. Winning is in this club’s DNA and it has been too long since we won a title. We have the talent at this club: we are not quite the finished article yet, otherwise we would be top of the league, but we have to try to win something in the next five months.”

It's an interesting debate, the whole ambition thing. I would argue that his incredibly lazy approach to management cancels out any empty platitudes he comes out with to the press.

A Moyes in sheep's clothing this fella.

Lazy I could live with, it's the stubborn arrogance that does it for me.

I see no sense in the discharging of his services before the season end.

There is likely a financial implication primarily.

Secondly whomever is lined up is either:

Already in a job so little point in announcing anything yet ... or ... Has had the tip off from the Board & is quite feasibly putting his back room team together & compiling / setting the wheels in motion potential transfer targets.

Far too much upheaval around Finch Farm given we are so close to the final game.

Football fans are becoming a more & more impatient lot since the advent of social media - the delay is quite logical, or it is to me anyhow.

That's a misplaced consideration for the man. The vitriol that is building up before the Norwich game will do more damage to Martinez personally as well as his career. To make no movement or statemnt this far is cruel to be honest, and after all, he is manager of Everton FC and shouldn't be put through that. By anyone. We used to have some dignity about the club. And pride.

What he says and what he's capable of are two very different things.
I do think he's made some bold moves, such as signing off on a £30m striker when it meant neglecting other areas of the team.

Still, I somehow doubt that many of the people banging on about what a stand up guy he is would like to spend a night down the pub with a teetotal, who listens to kids' pop music and speaks like he learned English by going door to door with Jehovah's Witnesses.

It will also damage the fans "relationship" with the players we retain.

If the club allow him to take charge on Sunday it will damage the club far more than having this utter clown in charge for 3 years has done.

I'm not particularly bothered about the guys reputation - he has gotten us into this situation. I'm happy to see him put through the mill a little.

He's refused to adapt, make correct substitutions, alter his style of play, sack fitness specialists, play Howard, etc etc ... the list is endless.

Nice guy, but I'm afraid he carries the can & is paid the big biccies to do so.

I think the chiefs believe they're acting in a way that's akin to dignity and pride by not announcing anything during the season.

Not quite going very well, but judging by the small number protesting after the Bournemouth game the chiefs probably think they made the right call.

I can not believe he actually comes out with this utter S****.

There's not such a thing as ‘winning the players back'”, Martinez replied. “Two weeks a ago, we had a good response, a really strong performance to get a win at home against Bournemouth.

“At Leicester we got caught up in the atmosphere and celebration of a unique footballing achievement and that lack of intensity cost us. We never lost the fight, we scored late in the game … but if you don't match the intensity of your opponent it'll be very difficult.

1) Strong performance against Bournemouth. Jesus H Christ. If that was a strong performance I would love to see what he says about the Leicester game.
2) Oh wait, here we go. Oh I get it. Its OK lads, its KK - the boys were just having fun, getting caught up in the party mood with Leicester, that's why we lost. No biggie.

See ya Martinez, you absolute numpty.

The comment about him being paid well so should be able to take abuse is a tasteless one.

He's doing his job to the best of his ability and serving Everton respectfully as he can.

That he's not up to the job needs addressing, but the personal abuse aimed at him marks us out as Villa or geordies.

I wish him nothing but the best and certainly wish it had worked out. Not so much because he sets lofty goals and "gets" Everton. But because if a manager is getting sacked that means Everton is doing poorly and that is more hurtful than anything. Was so hopeful that he would have us consistently challenging for the CL after season 1. Even our struggles in season 2 while I wasn't happy I chalked up to learning how to handle a squad of true international players coming off of a major tourney and then balancing that with learning how to compete in Europe for the first time. We should have expected growing pains.

His never ending positivity would grate on you, but I thought it was just his public persona and figured there was sternness there, just not publicly bashing players. Even this year around Christmas/January we had gotten into the top 10 and were advancing in the cups you thought maybe we have "gotten it" and can go on a run and possibly get silverware. Unfortunately post acquisition it all went to hell. Perhaps he was given no assurances at that point he would have a job in 2016/17. Who knows, all that is apparent is results turned and bar the Chelsea game it has been a disastrous run in, with players downing tools, questionable managerial decisions to say the least, what was once grating comments, now bordering on delusional.

All this aside - I do think he is a good man, who's management failure resides ultimately with himself and not one else, that is the nature of the position. His biggest failure to me is not being able to see-out results when in a position to. I wish him well and wonder if he is more suited to the continental game and would likely do better in Spain. It will be interesting to see where he ends up. As a weird coincidence I will be attending my second Everton game at Goodison this weekend, coming across the pond. While no doubt I am so excited to attend a game this year it is bittersweet the circumstances. I hope that we win and RM is given polite recognition that he tried hard for Everton and always spoke well of the club even if he hasn't produced the results required. He is leaving some fine young assets and the aging squad will be turned over with all the expiring contracts. We have not been relegated and the new manager whomever he is will be in a good position to build on the youth, sort the defense and not have some past it players on contracts absorbing budget that can be used on more dynamic contributors to the team.

A final goodbye - "Solo lo Mejor" (Just disappointed you were not able to bring it)

Personally, I think his original stubbornness has actually created a situation where it is now way beyond merely being a stubborn individual.

His persistent approach even though we're in decline is an example of delusion; he can't see another approach nor the actual situation we're in.
