Alright lads, you know I'm not one for gossip and I've backed Martinez a lot. I've also backed Stones, who this also applies to and could go in this thread, a lot.

Anyway, here goes:

After the game went to meet a mate and we've ended up out with a group of his mates and, thusly, their friends. All a bit older than us and one of them happens to be the head of fitness and conditioning at Barnsley.

We were talking in general about stuff but he didn't know I was an Evertonian - I hadn't brought it up and I'd never met him before. Seems a really decent bloke anyway.

He said that Stones had been back over to Barnsley a few weeks back, to see a few of the players etc.

It was around the end/middle of Feb when he was still out injured.

Obviously, his teammates/staff had quizzed him about a move etc., as they would naturally.

Stones told them that he wasn't dead-set on moving but it looked likely to happen and he had been taking Spanish lessons for the last few months as Barcelona had been in contact with both the club and his agent, and his family etc. thought it would be wise to get ahead in case anything panned out. Nothing else other than that.

He also said that after the Swansea game there had been a large feeling of unrest between the manager and some of the players and that there was a general feeling in the camp that they weren't enjoying it. Several players were voicing their concerns and that Martinez wasn't playing to their strengths either individually or as a team.

However, he said that things had improved since then with the results (so I'm guessing this visit was before WBA game). Said that the team was still not 100% sold on RM though and although behind him were sick of him and the other coaches not listening to their suggestions for training more on the defensive side.

He claimed that it's only after if something like not being able to defend a set-piece costs Everton in a game, then that's the only time they will work on it in training. He said they aren't drilled in any way defensively other than that, and if something works defensively in one game then it isn't practiced or drilled again until that same mistake re-occurs in a game.

He said that the players appreciate it but have themselves pointed out to management that they need more practice at certain times only to be told they aren't getting it.

He did say that the squad on the whole are behind the manager and know they have underachieved, but feel he is sometimes limiting them in how much they can achieve, and there's a general feeling that he may be restricting the younger players by being (on occasion) so stubborn with his style and they feel they have to take it into their own hands.

As I said, I'm not one for gossip and everybody knows my staunch support of RM.

I just thought I'd put this one here for extra info.

I must stress that the bloke I spoke to did not know I was an Evertonian at the time and it just came up in general conversation regarding the Euros and whether Stones would go and how he came through as a kid etc. He also said that this visit from Stones to Barnsley was around mid-February, so it may have changed since then re the situation with players/manager
That sounds daft enough to be true..

he could pull off being ITK on other Everton forums.

Considering we've had our disagreements on here I do actually pay attention to what you write because you can debate an issue, unlike some. For you to post this up I'll take your word on it.

What you posted doesn't surprise me, I've heard it in the past with the defensive thing, it is quite obvious that they are not unit and it goes from one extreme to the other with their defensive performances. It's quite worrying if players/staff seem to think it's hampering the younger players, in my opinion it's definitely affected stones. For the amazing footballer he his, his defensive standing has deteriorated fast, he's not being taught the art of defending. Row z is an option.

Suppose it'll be interesting over the next couple of months, the concerns raised will go to the top dogs. The majority of fans and media think he his stubborn, if it the players are voicing it then it's a concern for the club to deal with it. The balance between a happy team and manager needs to be achieved.

My biggest gripe with martinez is defence, it annoys the life out of me. Today we witnessed a high pressing game and suited us, winning back possession and stopping Chelsea doing anything. But once the tiredness set in the holes appeared and they started finding pockets of space, we again became alarmingly open through the midfield.

Thanks for passing this on, very interesting

For me, Bobby and the team need to show more consistency. So many false dawns. Even today's result doesn't make me feel he's turned it around. And I'm a fan ffs.

If true that confirms a lot of the suspicions I've had over the last 2 seasons. The evidence would suggest that it makes absolute sense as well.

I've known a manager to divide opinion like martinez, it's unreal. IMO his stubbornness is a killer, it's like a child who looses and goes home with the ball.

My major doubts began prior to Xmas 14, what was offered up as supposed football was awful, the worst I'd seen in 20 years at the club. And he just point blank refused to accept it, every game was the same.

That issue seemed to get solved in the summer, the varying in play is different, not afraid to go direct and long. Is the defensive thing going niw to be addressed in the summer instead of during the season, are we going to come back in the new season as a solid unit??

He's a strange man is bobby

I don't know if you remember this mate but in the 86 World cup, Robson was a bit reticent to use the Everton contingent, even though allegedly the lads in the camp were urging it. It wasn't until injuries forced his hand that our lads got a go, ultimately England went out but they went damn close that year. Point I'm trying to make is, that sometimes players and even fans for that matter can make and break a manager. I wrote awhile ago that Martinez maybe needs a nadir moment. Maybe the West Ham game was it, who knows as nsno - chris says we'll see in the next couple of months.

Sorry, I'm still on the fence. We all got excited after the first leg against City at home and then look what happened.

Couldn't be happier with the result, but consistency is the key for me.
The reality is he is 7 days away from another Goodison meltdown against Arsenal from abuse.
Having said that, Mr Moshiri will not be firing him. He will be Managing next season.

Great game we won ugly and our record signing performed like he should have. Hopefully string afew wins together and win the cup
i think its a time for cool heads, Robles tonight came out twice for the aerial threat and was on his game great team performance
we are going to be even mightier from now on ......
