I'd like to start off by saying under Martinez I seen Everton play the best football of my lifetime (16 years) in his first season which saw us finish 5th, we was very unlucky not to finish in the top 4. That season we played with an high tempo and was passing the ball fast. Our full backs was bombing forward and we was causing other teams havoc. We was scoring goals and defending well. Other teams were scared to play us, we beat Man U home and away, beat Arsenal home and drew away, won Chelsea at home and was very unlucky to get beat away losing to an 90th minute goal. We was playing the best teams and outplaying them looking like a team on the verge of breaking into the top 4, with a lot of potentially world class young players. Martinez looked like the perfect fit for us and the future looked bright.
However, in the second season everything changed. Teams began to put 10 men behind the ball and counter attack us where in the first season we would be the team counter attacking. This was evident in the first 3 games off the season, where we conceded 10 goals including six in one game vs Chelsea. We got beat by Chelsea at home and drew with Arsenal at home where in the season before we won both. The signs where there to come. We was no longer playing with the same confidence from the season before and the fluidity off are attacks where no longer to be seen. We looked like a team of players who have never played with each other before. We could no longer defend, and where conceding goals left right and centre. Martinez looked incapable of being able to tactically adapt to the different types of games we was playing in. It often looked like we entered games without an actually gameplan. I specifically remember the four games around Christmas time were we lost four games in a row to Southampton, Stoke, Newcastle and Hull. Them four games were some of the worst performances I've seen as an Everton supporter. Some fans including me "let off" Martinez as we had a good season in the Europa League but then 'Kiev' happened, something I don't want to remind myself too much off again. At that point it was mid March so there was no point in sacking him. My opinion was give him the summer and till Christmas in the next season and see how we was doing.
Now to this season, performances have improved but ultimately we are in the same position we was in last season. Mid-table, is no where near good enough for a club off our size and stature. This season we have played better football at times compared to last season but nothings changed in terms of league position. The amount of points we have lost from winning positions is terrible, and Martinez has to take 95% of the blame for this. As manager this is something he isn't capable of doing. We all know of the games we have lost points in so there's no point naming them. His substitutions have become awful as well, 2-1 up against West Ham with 10 men and he brings a striker on and goes 2 up front. Once again cup competitions have kept him in a job. Ultimately, back to back seasons outside the top half is unacceptable. We currently have a goal difference of +10 and are sat in 12th, this shows where are problems lie. This has been evident for a while now and Martinez has done nothing to change this. I know and I think most people know that it will take a lot for Martinez to get sacked while Kenwright is in charge.
Going forward we need a change of manager it seems that the players have lost confidence in Martinez and once that happens nothing good can come of it. We wont reach the next level while Martinez stays in charge and that's the main thing. It's a shame as well because I like him as a man and enjoy the way we play going forward but without balance it doesn't matter how well you are going forward. At the end of the day our performance in the league the past two seasons haven't been no where near good enough. Cup competitions have kept him in a job and doing well in the cup isn't good enough for us.
That's all from me I know it's a long thread but I just had to vent my frustration somewhere, if anyone does read this please leave some feedback, would like to hear other people's point of view.
Thanks for reading.
