What do you base that on?

The quality of our squad, our ability to score goals and the fact that results have not been reflective of performances.

Like I said, this is a subjective assessment. Any statement about the future is.

It's the same with predicting whether a young player will make it as a pro footballer. 1% are so brilliant they definitely will, 80% are so terrible they definitely won't, leaving a sizeable chunk in the middle of "you never know". For me, as a manager, RM is currently in the "you never know but definitely has potential" bracket, the man won the FA Cup with Wigan vs. Man City in the final for God's sake! He also got us 5th in his first season. It's just about consistency now, same is true of our players.

Are you not concerned that "the quality of our squad" is dependant on Lukaku's goals?

I am, to a degree.

However, unless something massively unexpected happens, I think the Lukaku situation is a win-win for us. Either we keep him and he continues scoring or we sell him for £50+ million. The one area where no-one can really criticise RM is transfers so I trust him to replace Lukaku either with an equally good player or with several players.

I think our Lukaku situation is the same as Liverpool's Suarez situation - who do you replace a goal machine with?

The only logical answer is "another goal
machine". But who?

And even if you can find one how much will they cost now that we apparently have money along with increased financial competition in the league.
And how much in wages and what clauses in contract to join a bottom half club if they even will

Quite. We had a top striker and we wasted him.

He'll be the best in the world one day.

His influence is clearly present, but, and it's a big but*, his isn't the final say any more

I think you're right on both points. The landscape has clearly changed. And hopefully the boards expectations will start to match those of the supporters. The targets set for any future managers of Everton will be higher than the previous two.
