It's not about choice but reality - answer this 5th place or for this year a more realistic top half but we actually win something which is why we exist. Of course we have to do better but don't dismiss what winning a cup means or as our most successful ever manager quoted the most important trophy was the first.

How about 5th place or a semi final?
Your comparing winning to not winning, I still don't get this argument

I think most are judging him on nearly 3 seasons in, 2 of which have been really poor in the league, despite what we might achieve in this years FA Cup.
But if he finished 7th and won the cup would you keep him? Not defending poor results at home as this must improve but not impossible we do the above.

Then the entire thread falls down on what may happen both in potential final league placing and what may happen in the cup. Judge at season end.

Bottom line is he hasn't won anything for us yet in the cup, and our league position is deteriorating from where it has been for a decade and more. If league position improves or we win a cup then perspectives on the job he is doing will improve.

Comparing 5th to winning something doesn't make sense though to me. At least compare winning the league to winning the cup, or coming 5th to getting knocked out in the quarter finals.

It's a moot point though mate. If we were in contention to finish top seven, then the discontent wouldn't be the same with the manager.

As it is, we could easily slump out of the FA Cup with one bad game in the semi against decent opposition, and finish about 14th. And that's actually looking the more likely scenario.

Confused by your last paragraph if we win the cup it's our first in 21 years which is what we will remember not years of 7th. It's trophies that matter likewise no one remembers who finishes 2nd in the league.

Might do yes but we don't know that hence season end is the right time to judge.

Put into context, my best guess is that'd require us winning at least six of our remaining nine games, and realistically it'd need to be seven.

So I'd be made up too - but it's pretty much an impossible outcome at this point.

Oh god yeah. It's never gonna happen. We're a bit crap.
