Roberto Martinez discussion

I got a text off my Utd-supporting mate in commiseration. They reckon that's their best away performance (wouldn't it) and Van Gaal did what a lot of UTd fans wanted, namely playing schneiderlin and herrera with rojo as lb instead of blind. Also it's worth pointing out that on the 50th anniversary of teh munich plane crash in 2008, a city team containing Benjani and Darius Vassell beat a United team with the Rooney-Ronaldo-Tevez trident, one of the best Utd teams in the last 30 years.

Yesterday was an anomaly it really was. the crowd were shellshocked and Utd played very well and playing through the centre narrow in direct contrast to previous play. I think Browning should have played but hopefully we'll be better for Arsenal. I'm amazed how many knee jerkers have come out of the woodwork though

So much knee jerk in here. We've lost two games this season against the two teams who spent the most money pre season. The only games I'm genuinely annoyed about the results were Watford at home because we should've been beating them all day long and Swansea away which is a tough fixture but on the day we outclassed them. I'm disappointed we didn't beat Liverpool but still a draw against them is never too bad given our recent record and a draw away at Tottenham is decent. Our wins have been two fantastic performances against Southampton and Chelsea and an incredible fight back where we scored three in the last half hour against a Pulis defence! Three wins and four draws from our opening run in is actually pretty decent and if we can take points against the teams we should do in our second quarter of fixtures we'll be right up there!

Yesterday sucked because of the result, the performance and Kendall, but even City and United have had very poor defeats this season, it happens.

Up until yesterday we had one of the best defensive records in the league

Yes, but look at the clean sheets

Spurs and Southampton were down to Howard making absolute wonder saves. We looked shaky at the back for both of those games

We've shipped 2 to west brom, 3 to Barnsley and 3 to United

We look nervy on crosses and set pieces

The defence IS an issue and it's thoroughly irresponsible to pretend otherwise

I think it's funny that the majority of the people who moan about 'knee jerk reactions' are actually the ones most guilty of it.

A couple of decent performances and people start saying we're on for top 4, Martinez has turned it round, it's just like the first season. Then we lose, people point out the flaws and it gets shouted down as knee jerk. Bizarre.

I think we've had the same problems all season and some of the positivity from fans has just led to them ignoring the evidence of their own eyes. We've conceded 2 or more goals in 5 of our 11 games yet people say the defence has been sorted. Galloway has had as many chasings as he has good games and he's been touted as world class. We've won 1 out of 5 home games. People say it's been a tough start but we're talking about a quarter of the season here, a loss next week means the results of the first 10 games have to be classed as poor.

We look more solid with FBs who dont bomb on.

I'd prefer Galloway and Browning rather than Baines and Coleman.

There, I've said it.

I'd prefer we left our forward play to be a mobile attacking unit chosen from Barkley, Lukaku, Deulofeu, Kone, Lennon, Mirallas (if he can pull his head out of his arse). The security of a flatter back four suits what we have going forward.

Same old chestnut, we ship a few goals and its back to 'he cant do the defence', zzzzz one of the main positives of this season has been our defensive side, especially since its been mainly the kids, most have noticed . Defence has been sound the weak link has been that buffoon between the sticks

So you dont think we had a tough start? We had probably the toughest opening 10 games in the league, most were saying we'd struggle to pick up 1 or 2 points. We've had a very solid start and after the arsenal game hopefully we'll really kick on

That buffoon has bailed the defence out more than once this season

And he's not even that good, his one good performance a month just happened to be in those games

The defence needs work and Martinez needs help

There's no shame in that. Arsene Wenger needed Steve Bould

In the NFL they have a designated defensive coach if the head coach has a deficiency in that area.

As much as people complain about "knee jerk" critics they are equally as knee jerk to any suggestion that Martinez isn't infallible and might deserve a pinch of criticism

Bailed us out lol hes made about 1 decent save this year,

We've not had a proper settle defence all season

We're not in the NFL

No I agree that it's been a tough start. If anyone genuinely thought we would only have 1-2 points after 10 games though, I would have to question their sanity. I think the difficult start has been overplayed, the likes of Swansea, southampton etc are difficult games, but no more so than palace, Leicester etc this season. It's a tough league, games are hard, we need to deal with it.

I think our start has been no more difficult than west hams or palaces for example, and the point I was making is that these tough teams we're playing make up 50% of our games over the season. We can't write them off as being too difficult.

This is a bit confusing, Galloway certain gets forward, he looked like he was trying to pull us back into the game himself at times yesterday.
