Roberto Martinez discussion

I'm not saying that so I'm not sure why you've said that? Let's take the manager out of it then of people can't stomach any mention of him. 4 years ago our current and recent levels of performance were deemed by the majority as not good enough. Excuses that were put forward such as the difference in spend were widely rejected. We now have better players yet the same level of performance is apparently ok because the top 4 are putting out expensive sides? All Everton sides should be judged to the same standard. We are underperforming considering the talent we have.

You're talking nonsense....

Maybe you're not saying it but on this page alone there's a poster telling another to 'get in the bin' for expressing a critical statement about a 3-0 home loss because United will finish in the top 4 this season. Why does that make a difference? Performances v City United and Spurs were not good enough this season.

I think we will win next game because the team will be motivated after that embarrassing performance. While we see some stupid tactical decisions and mistakes at times, this team does have fight in them. They will take that loss personally.

I'm happy with this thread as long as when the next manager comes in some random gets to thrash him and then we keep the thread open for the rest of his career so that people can vent every time we lose. Coming to think this thread less about folk's irrational hatred of Martinez (reminiscent of kopites over Hodgson) and more to do with modern football fans (everyone wants to be Bayern). Shame really because decent ideas that probably deserve their own thread (martinez's defense) get stuck in this ongoing tribunal on the manager.

Martinez has improved a lot from last season but he still has some work to do.
He needs to drop howard for starters and bin naismith to the bench.
I would like to see us press more and create more chances.
We have the best squad of players we have ever had in the premier league and if everybody works together a trophy could be on

I dont even know how the thread exists. The original post was a wondering out loud during the very early days of his tenure if we had recruited a manager who could hack it as Everton manager. Not even the cave dwellers (who came out of their caves after yesterdays's defeat having been missing for two months) who wanted Martinez out before he was hired believe now that Martinez isn't an Everton manager who can hack it.

Is the thread defunct? Imo, yes. What is there to discuss or debate seriously anymore? A team that's established now with at the very least the status of Moyes' period teams; a squad being successfully reconstructed under our gaze from an older one to a younger one; the ability to win with style on occasion, and with determined fightback's when needed (though prone to the occasional no show, as per yesterday). The future looks more than promising under a manager growing into his job and indisputably in control of the situation. A manager with the style and grace befitting this great club.

It's sort of a hub thread though, you can talk about most things Everton in here, it's the managers thread and completely normal to exist

We look more solid with FBs who dont bomb on.

I'd prefer Galloway and Browning rather than Baines and Coleman.

There, I've said it.

I'd prefer we left our forward play to be a mobile attacking unit chosen from Barkley, Lukaku, Deulofeu, Kone, Lennon, Mirallas (if he can pull his head out of his arse). The security of a flatter back four suits what we have going forward.

I think this is spot on, which is worrying. The trend in football does seem to be moving back to fullbacks who are defenders first. I remember saying to my dad last season we needed to sort out the fullback areas. Play Browning/Garbutt fullback and if needed Baines/Coleman ahead of them. I haven't seen enough yet to see if this is the best way to go but I think we will have some idea by Christmas as to whether we can rely on a system with attacking fullbacks.

If you watch us defensively our problems are very clear. We are overly susceptible to balls into the box. We lack dominant Centre Halves to deal with this and with two attacking fullbacks are always vulnerable to back post deliveries. Alongside that our fullbacks are not good enough to prevent enough crosses coming in. That is a recipe for disaster.

We are quite good at defending in front of the back four. Jagielka is quick, aggressive and brave but balls into the box catch us out.

Going forward I think your idea of getting at least one (ideally both) defense minded fullbacks would work. Alongside that it could allow us to play Barkley deeper longer term alongside McCarthy (who showed for Ireland he could be a very good central midfielder). If our fullbacks stay 10 yards further back it will mean out central midfielders have to cover fullbacks and should create a space for Barkley in there. I think he will be far more suited to playing a bit deeper and having the game in front of him.

We then have 4 spots in front. Baines and Coleman could fill a role further up the field. I also think one of Coleman/Baines playing wide, will get balls in for Lukaku.

In the end it's all about balance. When I've said about Martinez moderating his system a lot seem to think he has to do a u turn. That is not the case at all. However to play a particular way you have to safeguard ourselves. Playing Barkley in a midfield 2 currently, with the amount of gaps appearing at Fullback that need filling won't work.

I think Barkley in the 8 is the way to go. Taller more defensive back 4 allowing for Stones to play more of a sweeper role. Naismith/Kone can play in the 10 for now to support Lukaku. Long term a new number 10 and a new goalkeeper are what need fixing in that.

I imagine most fan forums have an ongoing thread discussing their manager.

Yeah, embarrassing isn't it. Having certain threads that are only used when we lose a game to randomly attack the manager.
It's not as if there are any threads there to congratulate a managers tactics when we win, you get one or two posters on here after a win just to make a point but this thread has been about moaning and calling for his sacking ever since it was started, on pretty much the day his appointment was announced.
And we laugh at the Kopites for 'Standing by their Manager' until they don't. Half on here don't even bother with that pretence. Now THAT'S embarrassing.

I've spent the day hungover to death on the couch.

Through my alcoholic haze of self loathing I've managed to read perhaps a page an hour of this thread starting from when the final whistle went yesterday.

Some of you beauts need to take a long hard look at yourselves - debate is great and to be encouraged but pissin your pants in excitement every time we lose just because you get a chance to post this drivel is embarrassing.

Get a grip FFS.

Nice to see some fierce piping down as well in the absence of neg rep.

Would you trust Robles over Howard?
