Roberto Martinez discussion

I've spent the day hungover to death on the couch.

Through my alcoholic haze of self loathing I've managed to read perhaps a page an hour of this thread starting from when the final whistle went yesterday.

Some of you beauts need to take a long hard look at yourselves - debate is great and to be encouraged but pissin your pants in excitement every time we lose just because you get a chance to post this drivel is embarrassing.

Get a grip FFS.

Nice to see some fierce piping down as well in the absence of neg rep.
Thats not a hangover, thats the roofy starting to wear off

I think van Gaal's clocked on to how to do well in the Premier League quite quickly to be honest. Low risk, basic football done well is enough to beat the vast majority, including us yesterday unfortunately.[/QUOTE

You are a gaping anus of a man.

Where did it all start? Watching foreign football on S4C? James Richardson sipping Expresso and not wearing socks? Long haired Argentinians bullying dull defences in Serie A? Tedious "tiki taka" teams over celebrating a few passes?

You're from a shitty peninsula in the north west of England. Before you start to pour scorn on your beloved flair teams being beaten by well run teams you should learn about the game of your country first. Then, once you've giving a semblance of understanding about the game, you can proceed to watching foreign football to your heart's content.

But at the moment you are nothing more than a sneering kopite who is easily seduced by a step over. If you knew your Everton you would appreciate that it's greatest teams could dominate through the physical side of the game as much as the technical.

You utter throbbing cockshaft.

@micknick I consider this bullying and demand action.

You have such a way with words, i doff my hat to you good sir

This is bang on for me and I agree with the poster you were replying to
I think defensively Baines and more so Coleman aren't the greatest yet some on here would have you think there the greatest full backs to ever play football

I've always been a huge fan of Baines but last season he was poor especially trying to stop crosses
And Coleman seems to get caught out of possition

Can I direct you to the utter fraud in goal who fails to open his mouth for 90minutes.

Oh Boy.

I think this is spot on, which is worrying. The trend in football does seem to be moving back to fullbacks who are defenders first. I remember saying to my dad last season we needed to sort out the fullback areas. Play Browning/Garbutt fullback and if needed Baines/Coleman ahead of them. I haven't seen enough yet to see if this is the best way to go but I think we will have some idea by Christmas as to whether we can rely on a system with attacking fullbacks.

If you watch us defensively our problems are very clear. We are overly susceptible to balls into the box. We lack dominant Centre Halves to deal with this and with two attacking fullbacks are always vulnerable to back post deliveries. Alongside that our fullbacks are not good enough to prevent enough crosses coming in. That is a recipe for disaster.

We are quite good at defending in front of the back four. Jagielka is quick, aggressive and brave but balls into the box catch us out.

Going forward I think your idea of getting at least one (ideally both) defense minded fullbacks would work. Alongside that it could allow us to play Barkley deeper longer term alongside McCarthy (who showed for Ireland he could be a very good central midfielder). If our fullbacks stay 10 yards further back it will mean out central midfielders have to cover fullbacks and should create a space for Barkley in there. I think he will be far more suited to playing a bit deeper and having the game in front of him.

We then have 4 spots in front. Baines and Coleman could fill a role further up the field. I also think one of Coleman/Baines playing wide, will get balls in for Lukaku.

In the end it's all about balance. When I've said about Martinez moderating his system a lot seem to think he has to do a u turn. That is not the case at all. However to play a particular way you have to safeguard ourselves. Playing Barkley in a midfield 2 currently, with the amount of gaps appearing at Fullback that need filling won't work.

I think Barkley in the 8 is the way to go. Taller more defensive back 4 allowing for Stones to play more of a sweeper role. Naismith/Kone can play in the 10 for now to support Lukaku. Long term a new number 10 and a new goalkeeper are what need fixing in that.

Agree with that mate. The point about having a more defensive minded back four and that providing the platform to draw Barkley back into one of the two CM posts is a good one, though dependent on getting this playmaker in (which is becoming like a hunt for a unicorn for Martinez it appears!). And dead right about Seamus too. Both he and Baines can be played in roles further up the pitch.

Sometimes you stumble upon a way forward through injuries to first teamers. Galloway and Browning at FBs is just such a case, imo.

I was basically making the point that I agreed about the defensive capabilities of Baines and Coleman
And I do think Galloway will be the "new" type of full back maybe not as good as Baines going forward but technically a great player and defender
I think browning is more hibbert going forward and we would need better

And this would allow Barkley to drop back

no idea what you're otherwise on about but i enjoyed the evocation here

So we play two holding midfielders to allow for our two flying fullbacks. Yet recently we've played with CBs at full back but kept the two defensive midfielders? What is the logic in setting up a midfield without anyone who can distribute the ball to conduct an attack?

Yesterday was a massive let down. To capitulate on such a day was a heart breaker.
Next week doesn't fill me with hope, Arsenal are going well.
After last season, and I mean the season not just the last few weeks, we were very poor. In the transfer window we didn't bring in the players we needed.
Having said that we have progressed, we are better than we were.
We have injuries in key places.
All the above considered Martinez is moving us in the right direction.
He plays Naismith when he clearly isn't good enough to start.
He does't play Mirellas after keeping him.
He plays two defensive mid-fielders who don't work well together.
He plays forward players who defend.
Martinez is making mistakes.
Bit of me is saying last year getting beaten by Man Utd wouldn't have hurt so much because we would nearly have expected it, so has he brought us to the stage were we now should beat these teams.
The next window will be a big test for him, as a team with the players he has I think we are under-performing. He needs to hang on to the talent and ship on some dead wood. He needs to bring in one or two good players.
My opinion is that he is building a squad that will play at the top end of the table when he has got everyone in place. I think he will move us on again in the next window.
I think he will but I'm not sure I believe he will.
This one step forward followed by two steps back followed by two steps forward saps the belief.

Did anyone else read that thinking it was a poem?
