Roberto Martinez discussion

February: “Tim at the moment is the number one and whenever he is fit he needs to lose that position."

Yesterday: "It is a healthy competition, it’s not the case Tim one and Joel is two."

Give it another few months.

Same way if allardyce or pulis walked in the door everyone would give them a chance even though they are linked with relegation teams all the time ? Some people didnt want a manager who just got a team relegated at the expense of a cup run for his personal collection. Eat sleep trophy-relegation then do one.
Having a laugh are you mate?

"His role on the pitch is much more important than his individual performance."

I'm sorry, but that is complete and utter nonsense. During my little tour of the DW Stadium(see thread 'Wigan' in World Football Forum) it was obvious how proud Wigan were of winning the FA Cup for the town of Wigan, and how grateful they were for Martinez efforts to keep them in the Premier League against overwhelming odds, both financial and player quality. At Wigan they still have nothing but good words about Martinez(and Dave Whelan, incidentally) and it is ridiculous to suggest that he concentrated on winning the cup just for his own personal cv.

There was many danger signs that wigan would be relegated, they almost swerved the league status for a FA Cup. A family friend who is a wigan season ticket holder says he loves bobby especially for the fa cup win although he said what the 'plotters' said, he is too stubborn, win lose or draw, top four or relegation he will not change his philosophy. He won the FA cup then done one, he also got mccarthy alcaraz and kone from them. Yet moyes was wiped from many peoples memories because he chased baines and fellaini.

This response makes my skin crawl.

Just making the point that some people will have doubts in some managers before a game has taken place, allardyce and pulis are two names linked with us before bobby and everyone threatened to cause murder. Im not saying sam or tony are better than bobby but they never got relegated as far as im aware but bobby did with wigan. Rather have bobby out of the three but im just saying that every manager will have their doubters - doesnt make them anti martinez etc....

Mate you can't even compare those three. One is our Catalan wizard, as @davek quite often points out. One is responsible for the making of the Yard Dogs- er Stoke. And one is Sam Allardyce.

People were much more upset with the manner moyes went after Baines and Felliani (27m for both????!) and the fact he was planning to leave for United ahead of time. Every manager comes back for players when they get a new job, it's the manner he went about the whole business that angered everyone so badly. Wigan were going to go down at any rate, so they should mug off a shot at silverware just for an outside shot at staying up? Martinez has his faults as does every manager and it's fair to discuss them as with everyone else. There's a difference between specific criticisms and just hating the man from the off.

It wasn't owt to do with the fact that he "chased" Baines and Felllaini, Paul, it was the insulting remarks he made about our club which has led to him becoming personna non grata to many of us, not to mention the derisory two for the price of one offer he made for them.

Bobby, on the other hand, was very gentlemanly in his dealings with Wigan as he negotiated to buy players who were not going to stay with a relegated club anyway.

So, Bobby won the Cup at Wigan and then "done one"?

If only we could say the same about Mr. Moyes.......he won nowt with us before he done one.

As for Wigan.......they were always going to be relegated at some stage in the near future.

The miracle is they actually got to the EPL in the first place, never mind hanging around for so long.

Wigan fans know this themselves hence the Cup final day being the highlight of their football supporting careers.

I was a big fan of Martinez and thought he was a breath of fresh air around the club especially after we became stagnant with Moyes.

Recently though he decision making and ramblings in the press are becoming ridiculous, he needs to concentrate on his job and start making the tough decisions even if it means upsetting his "favourites".

How is it 'ridiculous' to stand by the club's first choice GK for the past decade and also say that this GK has an important part to play on the pitch besides his own goal keeping responsibilities?

You might not agree with it, but it's far from being ridiculous.

I have to laugh especially about the reaction to that latter quote of Martinez's concerning TH having a role other than personal performance on the pitch: it was flagged up by one of the most bitter Kopites writing in football and it's been seized on by some Evertonians as a piece of honest commentary that has wit and punctures 'gobbledegook'.

Imagine falling for that.
