Roberto Martinez discussion

6th - 8th - who cares? Neither of those positions get us silverware.

Yes 6th is better than 8th, but functionally only because of prize money (and the possibility of European places falling down to 6th). I'd rather we win a cup and finish 10th than finish 6th.

Everton's descending goals should be:
Win the League (unrealistic)
Finish top 4 (slightly more realistic, but not regularly)
Win a Cup.
Finish as high as possible not top 4.

Moyes finishing 6th regularly and Martinez finishing 8th regularly? Meh, both of those miss the important goals. Both are, in a sense, failures. It really doesn't matter who finishes higher it's just asking who failed less badly.

I have hopes Martinez will take us to one or more of the real goals, while accepting that regular CL football is out of our financial reach at current time. And winning the League would require us to unearth a world class player and have everything fall our way AND not have a player slip at a crucial moment.

In other words......we should be aiming to finish as high up the table as possible and try to win a trophy.

That I believe is the raison d'être of Everton Football Club and what Roberto Martinez should be aiming at.

And I am sure he is.

We will do fine under Martinez. My support wobbled last year, but I honestly do believe that he is the right man to take our club forward.

Our next 5 games are vital in kickstarting our season proper. All of them are games you look at and think "we could do these".

Allez, Allez.

Catcher making some MASSIVE calls here.

I am amazed and impressed you got that far down the post mate, most give up on my general verbiage well before you do!

On Stones it is a big call. I am certainly not 100% on that. You can see Stones is going to be a top class centre half. His ability to build attacks from deep is about the bets I've ever seen, even more so than Ferdinand (though I think Ferdinand was the better defender). For sides who win titles it's hard to under estimate this. It allows you to be on the back foot defensively and be building towards scoring a goal 1 or 2 passes later. The ball he puts through for Deulofeu on Sunday is incredible.

In the here and now though can I honestly say, given what we require his skills would be massively missed if we went and got in the Danish lad from the Germany club we were linked with? Hand on heart I'd say I'm not sure. I don't think it would be absolutely disastrous.

Let's not forget though that Martinez had a great first season built on a better defensive record than Moyes ever produced.

As you say, it's been gutted now and rebuilt. Impressively so I'd say.

Yes that is a relevant point. I don't think Martinez is as good at drilling defences as Moyes was. However I think he feels if we dominate the ball enough we won't have to defend very often. I also think he has an eye for a good defender.
