Roberto Martinez discussion

The Spanish lad is doing alright at the moment. I'll revisit this if he drops Barkley or Deloufeu etc for Cleverly, and Osman/Naismith start cropping up in the team again, obviously. Now if he just had the testicles to sell and replace USA Tim in January we could close the thread.

Credit were credit is due, after weeks of leaning on the fence, Martinez has the lads producing some good attacking football lately, still like to see Mirallas and Lennon given more game time (two wingers etc) but the confidence seems to be flowing through the attacking third and long may it continue. Win me back bobby.....

The next run of fixtures will show whether we have turned a corner or not. For me I feel this team has improved from last season but is showing good and bad traits.

Good: Deulofeu, Barkley, Lukaku all fit and in form. No problem scoring when playing well. Kone and Del have brought creativity back into the team. Not losing to the so called lesser teams in the league. Confidence up, cup run intact, decent league position.

Bad: Tim Howard, the defence (not individuals but as a unit), rubbish mentality/lack of quality resulting in dropped points v Watford, Liverpool, Swansea, West Ham. Not getting a point out of United (who are struggling to score), City, and Arsenal (all three since exposed). Being behind or level with our peers Spurs and Liverpool who both have Europa commitments and completely new teams where we have none and a settled side.

Beating the worst two sides in the league at home was great but to really do something in this league we have to beat teams like Bournemouth away and get on long winning runs. Another draw, like the West Ham game because we're just not going for it enough will just result in a mid table finish at the end of the season especially if we continue to not perform v top sides.

This season is a great opportunity for us and for once we have the offensive players in form to do something about it. We can't mess it up either through the usual Everton fear of winning anything or Martinez not going for it. The next run of fixtures will be key in doing anything this season. Faff around and we can watch Spurs and Liverpool going for what we want and all our eggs are in the cups basket.

We've played 5, drawn 5 and lost 3. Looking at the opposition, that's not a bad return.

We've built a midfield which doesn't rely on Osman and Pienaar, even without the services of Cleverley.

And we've defended well considering that all the first choice defenders have missed games through injury.

It's evident that Martinez is going for it!

Ignore him lad. One of the most blatant agendas I've ever seen on here, in many a year. Manages to shoehorn a veiled criticism of Martinez into about 50% (guesstimate) of his posts.

In fairness, if we were showing no bad traits we'd be running away with the league, but I get what you mean. A few things you mentioned are a bit out of our control, such as struggling for a settled back 4 due to injuries and we can't control how many games Spurs win.

I think the positives are most definitely outweighing the negatives at the moment, hopefully it stays that way.

Obviously we can't control what Spurs do but when assessing Everton's performance they're an obvious comparison. They completely changed their whole midfield, and pretty much half their defence, plus they have Europa League football. Yet they are pushing top 4 but with our settled squad and clear fixture list we're not yet everyone is going on about it being great football. It's a decent start with some outstanding performances but not enough consistency given our quality. I'm sure this sort of view makes me an agenda driven WUM for some but honestly I feel we can do better (and hopefully we will).

We're 4 points behind them with 75 to play for. Let's not worry about falling too far behind them just yet.

We need to win our home games and pick up whatever we can away.

It won't be an easy game tomorrow. A draw wouldn't be the worst result. Just like it wasn't at West Ham or Swansea.
