Roberto Martinez discussion

You need to learn sarcasm, mate.

I'm not really arguing for a guy who last year was managing brentford, ffs.
Point taken lad, a few of your other posts were a bit give with one hand and take with the other re Martinez which in all honesty I don't get given his first season and the joy he's brought back to Goody.

Also sarcasm isn't always as obvious to the reader as the writer thinks when written.

But hey ho no worries, apologies for jumping in.

If we're being serious, I do think he's bought joy back to goodison simply by not being bloody Moyes.

I just also think there is a wide wide gap between better than Moyes and a top manager and I worry that my standards have been lowered too much by the likes of Smith and Moyes that I get all excited on the basis of a few passes and some nice quotes without him actually doing much. So I'm kind of deliberately talking myself into caution so I don't get carried away by hype and expectation.

It's not fair on martinez to expect too much, if nothing else. And I hate blind faith and cult of devotion to managers who have yet to win a trophy here. I hated it when it was Moyes and I hate it just as much with Bobby.

But, as I've said lots of times, Bobby's had a very good first year so far, not perfect but better than expected. Hopefully we can get europe this year and make a real challenge for a trophy next. That would be very good work by him if so. As good as you could reasonably expect, really.

He's certainly miles and miles away from me seriously wanting to get rid of him and replace him with Uwe Rosler, ffs.

Though I would find it very funny if Rosler did win the FA cup again with Wigan after I said Martinez winning it last year, with a better team, was the most impressive managerial feat in english football in my lifetime. I don't actually think he has any chance of doing it, but it would be an astounding achievement.

All I can say is that I love going to Goodison for a game these days in a way I haven't in God knows how long.

That is down to Bobby.

We're not the best team about by any stretch soI try not to get too upset we haven't won anything again.

The fact we've had a genuine go at it, instead of knowing our place is enough for me, for now

It's got better under Bobby, I won't argue. The way Moyes kept disrespecting my club and alienating the young players combined with that abject surrender against wigan made me honestly doubt whether I would buy a season ticket if he was still in charge. And coming out of the ground after the derby and the early season wins it felt great, like there was a whole new energy around the club and everything was possible again.

Unfortunately I haven't felt that same energy at all over the last few months.

And honestly for me the biggest change wasn't when Moyes left and Martinez came, as glad as I was to see that happen, but when we bought Jelavic and Gibson. That was the real sea change, the moment when going to Goodison stopped being a chore and started being exciting again.

Since then we've been excellent at home and mostly great to watch at home. Under both managers. As much as that wigan game and the wembley derby were soul destroying awful games that should have led to Moyes being sacked, we were mostly superb to watch at home in the league last year and at the back end of the year before. Really great.

And, on the whole, we've been as good if not slightly better at home this year.

Long may it continue. But I think it's not fair to our players and the way they performed last year in games vs qpr, newcastle, the manchester clubs, west ham etc to put that all on Martinez' shoulders as if he improved an awful side. He didn't. He took over a very good side and has made them slightly better. That's not to be sniffed at, mind, if he keeps improving us slightly every year he'll be one of the best managers we've ever had.
