Roberto Martinez discussion

Tbf a lot of good points made. I'd say a lot of us were worried about the defensive side of Martinez, as well as the going back for ex-Wigan players!

The guy in the middle clearly didn't look past wigans results and eventual relegation and ignored the potential of Martinez phylosphy at a bigger club with better players.

Comparing him to jewel is just deluded and lacking knowledge of football styles etc....

Anyway think bobby has proved a lot of people wrong. He could well be the most liked manager in the league!

It's easy to laugh in hindsight, I think a lot of people had the same feelings at the start of the season.

I agree about the Jewel comparison just short sighted and lacking knowledge about the style of the coaches. For me Robertos style will suit the bigger clubs better, he plays football.

Some smart arsed carts on here. It's easy to vault people in hindsight. This appointment appears to have paid off, but it was always a risk... one that ultimately proven worth taking. I think the same people doing the vaulting probably had similar thoughts to those they are pulling up on it, but the only difference is they didn't put it down on paper. You guys.

I remember watching this, still think that fella's a bad tit. Martinez wasn't my first choice, but from the moment he got the job I was behind him all the all the way. That's what supporters are supposed to do, not Hodgson him out the club before he's had any time to work.

Philip Carter is wearing the mask

Everton’s Life President Sir Philip Carter has paid the ultimate compliment to Roberto Martinez by comparing him to the Club’s greatest ever manager, Howard Kendall.

Martinez has been at Goodison Park less than a year but Sir Philip has already been mightily impressed with how the Spaniard’s fresh approach has rubbed off on everyone connected to the football club.

Sir Philip was Everton chairman when Kendall brought success to Everton with the trophy-laden period throughout the mid-1980s.

And asked if he could see likenesses between the two managers, Sir Philip said: “In many respects, yes.

“Howard was slightly younger at the time when we got him to join us but it’s the attachment that the man [Martinez] can afford to the people he is dealing with. It’s not just the players - it’s the rest of the organisation.

“And, as he [Martinez] has said, Everton is the friendly club. We all know that is the case.”

Sir Philip added: “The whole thing started when Roberto walked through the doors.

“I remember when I went up to Finch Farm to see him and have a chat and almost everybody said 'what a fantastic man'. I thought to myself ‘he only came through the door this morning!’

“There was a marvellous atmosphere which has now carried on right the way through.”

Sir Philip was recognised for his four decades’ worth of service to Everton on Wednesday evening when he left St George’s Hall with the Howard Kendall award – the accolade which celebrates outstanding contribution at the Club.

The 86-year-old admitted it was a huge surprise to be recognised in such a manner.

“It’s fantastic,” he added. “I had absolutely no idea.

“When we talk about this award we think about footballers and people who are functioning in the Club, so I think it is marvellous.”
