Roberto Martinez discussion

Robles was cheap and still has promise, Alcaraz was free and still provides good cover for fourth choice cb, Kone hasn't even had a chance yet to prove himself... He did alright in a [Poor language removed] Wigan team and we didn't know we were getting Lukaku at the time. His form when he signed was a Damn sight better than Jelavics. He was relatively cheap as well.
I wouldn't say 6m was relatively cheap for a 30 year old with no sell on value.I know hindsight is a wonderful thing but I cant say I was overly excited when he joined us or for any of the other Wigan gang we signed ( Including Roberto who the jury is still out on).
That said I like Martinez and I hope he does succeed and god knows he must have something to manage to get 30 million out of Kenwright as even the cheesy chip man from Birkenhead didn't even manage that.

I honestly do not put the pre-season schedule down to El Bob. The World Cup was a huge factor in late decisions being made re pre-season games. Newcastle took a place that we were offered on that Oz/NZ as El Bob thought that would be too much travelling, and he sure as sh1t did not want to go to Thailand and actually Chang did not want us involved in a game largely promoted and sponsored by their biggest Thai business rivals either... Whichever bean counter sanctioned that trip should be ousted !!
Maybe, but giving WC players extra rest and then having two organise to midweek match fitness games was a calamity down to him.

Agreed I'd even consider putting Galloway in there if he does the unthinkable and brings no new centre half through the door.

I genuinely have never seen a worse pair of centre halves start regularly for Everton on current form.
Go into the rest of the season with those two in place, and even drafting in Stones, and we will be regretting it until January when they'll have to pay through the nose to get a CB in.

He got rid of Duffy. It seemed a strange decision to me unless he's cleared a space for an incoming CB. It'll be viewed as a ridiculous decision if he goes on to stick with just the three he has now.

Partly down to El Bob, largely down to the agreement by others to take games that would not have been taken had the preseason I suspect he wanted had gone ahead... that did NOT include Thailand.

Would you consider putting Galloway in if we bring no one in and we still ship left right and centre, Dave?

I support Martinez 110%, but I think he got drawn into his tv appearances and WC role out there; so much so that he's taken his eye off the ball. It's hard not to suspect that he's not been fully focused himself and therefore hasn't demanded it of others.

struggling to thin of a worse centre back pair or individuals in my time supporting everton.

i mean even under walter we had gough and weir

I would agree with you that maybe his TV work was too big a distraction and I would also venture that nobody talked to Jags or Bainsey about the WC disappointment and the grief the pair of them from certain sections of the media. Maybe we need to employ a sports psychologist to help certainly Jags over whatever it is that is affecting his performances at present.

Roberto is clearly an offensive coach. My concern last year was he inherited Moyes defence (the one thing the dour Scot excelled at) and once that had run its course (Distin, Jags and Barry are only going to get slower) this would expose his weakness. Wigan got humped by 8 goals twice..and Roberto stood at the touchline both times and had no idea tactically what to do to keep the score down. The flick by Besic when he came in is pure Roberto...cavalier.

Good teams will give that slow backline a hiding. Chelsea last season had no Fabregas threading balls through or Costa finishing the chances created, so no comparison can be drawn to how the defence coped this season to last. Arsenal had most of their attackers missing at Goodison last season, again no comparison to this. The quickest attack the defence faced last season (our neighbours) scored seven in 2 games. Also pushing both full backs forward leaves massive holes in the defence. Stones at Anfield got badly burned.

Jags has always been vulnerable to movement...his England debut he got destroyed by Villa...turned inside out three times on the edge of the area after he had gave the ball away. Never been good on the ball..in the summer his sliced clearance fell to the Uruguyan winger who blazed over the bar when he should have scored. Distin meanwhile has always had a calamitous streak. Suarez has been the beneficiary of both quite a few times. Despite their obvious frailties, Moyes got them (and the whole team) organised and playing as a unit. Age has caught up with them and add in the increase in quality of the opposition this season will only expose them further.
